Ricky Rene Maymi (/ˈmaɪmiː/; is an American rock musician, best known as an original member of the psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
A founding member and original drummer of the BJM, he then switched to guitar and finally on to bass guitar before leaving the band in 1993. He rejoined as 12-string guitarist in 2003.[1]
Other projects
In 2013 Maymi toured with psychedelic shoegaze band LSD and the Search for God and The Telescopes as a guitarist.
Maymi has collaborated with Liverpool's The Wild Swans, fronted by Paul Simpson and has worked with Steve Kilbey of The Church.
Kilbey and Maymi recorded an album entitled "The Wilderness Years by David Neil", released in July 2011. The David Neil referred to in the title of this album is a fictional rock star 'from days past' described in press material as the original song writer for the project.[2]
This pseudonym was created, Maymi has explained, as a means for the duo to achieve "creative liberation by not exactly having to be `ourselves'".[3] The name David Neil is also a portmanteau of David Bowie and Neil Young.
Maymi has also performed and recorded alongside Kilbey in (Underground Lovers guitarist) Glenn Bennie's collaborative musical project, GB3, for the "Damaged/Controlled" album, released in 2010 on Australian label Rubber Records.[4] Kilbey and Maymi have also performed together in The Triffids for their "Secret In The Shape Of A Song" concerts in tribute to the late Triffids vocalist David McComb which took place in Sydney (2008), Melbourne (2008) and Perth (2009).[5]
Maymi records and performs with the San Francisco-based rock band, Mellow Drunk featuring Leigh Gregory and is a founding member of the neo-psychedelic/surrealist rock band, The Imajinary Friends, in which he continues to work with today. The line-up of The Imajinary Friends spawned from the initial line-up of The BJM. The band currently includes Travis Threlkel (of Tipsy, and formerly of the BJM) and Tim Digulla (of Tipsy).[6] Past members include Matt Hollywood (of the BJM, The Out Crowd, and The Rebel Drones) and Graham Bonnar (of Swervedriver and the BJM). Maymi has also performed and recorded in Los Angeles band, Smallstone with former BJM alumni Jeff Davies and Mara Keagle.
2007: as Lead guitarist, Maymi recorded and toured Australia with The Black Ryder for their album "Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride" and toured the U.K. with (former Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized member) Will Carruthers in the Freelovebabies. San Francisco band LSD and the Search For God recorded an album and toured California with Maymi on drums.
In 2001 Maymi toured North America with Sonic Boom's Spectrum as guitarist.
He is also known for making guest appearances around the world with artists and groups including The Triffids for their "Secret In The Shape Of A Song" tribute to David McComb concerts in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and London. Other names include The Church, Marty Willson-Piper, Steven Roback of The Rain Parade, Twink of Pretty Things fame, The Clientele, The Clean, The Lea Shores, The Koolaid Electric Company, The People's Revolutionary Choir, The Morning After Girls and Jean-Jacques Perry.
