Richard Saturnino Owens (born November 18, 1962), known as Rick Owens, is an American fashion designer.

Early life and career

Owens studied fine arts at Otis College of Art and Design, in Los Angeles, for two years before dropping out and taking pattern-making and draping courses at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, leading to work in the garment industry doing knock-offs of designer clothing.[2]

His own label, begun in 1994, found a following, selling exclusively to Charles Gallay, a pioneering Los Angeles retailer who kept Owens in business for several years.

In 2001, Rick Owens joined forces with the Eo Bocci Associati group to internationally develop the Owenscorp company and his production moved to Italy. That same year, Kate Moss posed in one of his leather jackets for an editorial shot by Corinne Day. Later that year Annie Leibovitz photographed Owens and Kembra Pfahler, the designer’s controversial muse, wearing his designs for the Vogue US September issue. He showed his first runway collection in September 2002 during New York Fashion Week. The show was sponsored by American Vogue and Anna Wintour lists him as one of her three “Most Fabulous Recent Discoveries”. Owens' look has been described as "glamour-meets-grunge".[citation needed]

In 2002, Owens was appointed artistic director at Revillon, the French fur company that was founded in 1723.

Working and producing in Europe led him to his move from Los Angeles to Paris and show during the Paris collections. He also began his longstanding collaboration with stylist Panos Yiapanis, who has been working with Owens on all his catwalk shows to date.[citation needed]

Owens identifies as bisexual [3] and he is married to Michele Lamy. Since 2003, he has lived in Paris.

In 2013, Rick Owens announced he would be opening a night club in London, UK. He intends to recreate the atmosphere of 'Spotlight', a night club in Paris.[4]

In his October 2013 fashion show, he had the Zetas, Washington Divas, Soul Steppers, and Momentums step teams model his clothes using 'grit face' expressions.[1]

Awards and achievements

In 2002, Owens won the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Emerging Talent Award. In 2007, he was awarded a Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award and the Fashion Group International's Rule Breaking award.
