Richland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 16,233, which is an increase of 0.5% from 16,149 in 2000.[1] Its county seat is Olney.[2]
History
Richland County was established on February 24, 1824, out of portions of Clay and Lawrence counties.

According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 361.90 square miles (937.3 km2), of which 359.99 square miles (932.4 km2) (or 99.47%) is land and 1.91 square miles (4.9 km2) (or 0.53%) is water.[3]

As of the census of 2000,[6] there were 16,149 people, 6,660 households, and 4,535 families residing in the county. The population density was 45 people per square mile (17/km²). There were 7,468 housing units at an average density of 21 per square mile (8/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.16% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 34.4% were of German, 27.2% American, 10.7% English and 7.8% Irish ancestry.
There were 6,660 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.80% were married couples living together, 8.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.90% were non-families. 27.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,185, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $28,955 versus $19,693 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,847. About 9.80% of families and 12.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.60% of those under age 18 and 7.00% of those age 65 or over.

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Olney have ranged from a low of 19 °F (−7 °C) in January to a high of 88 °F (31 °C) in July, although a record low of −25 °F (−32 °C) was recorded in February 1951 and a record high of 112 °F (44 °C) was recorded in July 1936. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 2.73 inches (69 mm) in February to 4.76 inches (121 mm) in May.[7]
