Rich Costey

Rich Costey is an American record producer, mixer and engineer, whose credits include Sigur Rós,^[1] Frank Turner,^[2] Muse,^[3] Foster the People,^[4] Santigold,^[5] The Shins,^[6] Nine Inch Nails, Franz Ferdinand,^[7] Interpol,^[8] Glasvegas,^[9] Bowery Electric,^[10] The Mars Volta,^[11] Jane's Addiction,^[12] TV on the Radio,^[13] Mastodon,^[14] Fiona Apple,^[15] Flagship, Birdy,^[16] Rage Against the Machine,^[17] Weezer,^[18] Jimmy Eat World,^[19] My Chemical Romance,^[20] Supergrass, Audioslave,^[21] Arctic Monkeys,^[22] System of a Down, and Bloc Party.^[23]

He produced and mixed Foster the People's latest single "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" and mixed forthcoming albums from Santigold (Master of My Make-Believe) and The Shins (Port of Morrow).

Biography

Costey grew up in Waterbury, Vermont. As a teenager Costey worked at the Waterbury radio station WDEV. In his free time he took advantage of the station’s production studio to record the band he was in, called Spontaneous Generation.

Costey attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston for a couple years and started working at Q Division Studios as an assistant. There, he not only learned about classic recording techniques, but also started working with producer Jon Brion, whom he credits as an important influence, and future collaborator.

After establishing a reputation in Boston as the go-to local producer for indie bands such as the Swirlies, Costey moved to New York in his early twenties. In 1995, he started working at Philip Glass’s Looking Glass studio, and within six months he was the facility’s head engineer. At the same time, he worked with bands such as Bowery Electric and the Lilys at Michael Deming's Studio 45 in Hartford, CT.

After relocated to Los Angeles, Costey linked back up with Brion to collaborate on the Fiona Apple track Brion was producing for the soundtrack to Pleasantville. He later engineered and mixed Fiona Apple’s Brion produced album When the Pawn….

His work on the Fiona album attracted the attention of legendary producer Rick Rubin, who loved the sound of When The Pawn... and hired Costey to mix Audioslave’s 2002 self-titled debut and Rage Against The Machine’s 2003 live album, Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium.

In 2003, Muse recruited Costey to produce their breakthrough third LP, Absolution. His most recent credits include The Shins, Santigold, Birdy, Jane's Addiction, Foster the People, TV on the Radio and Frank Turner.
