ResPublica (from the Latin phrase, res publica meaning 'public thing') is a British independent public policy think tank, founded in 2009 by Phillip Blond.[1][2] It describes itself as a multi-disciplinary, non party-political research organisation, whose aim is to create bold solutions to enduring social and economic problems.[3]
ResPublica is an independent, non-partisan think tank, focusing on developing practical solutions to socio-economic and cultural problems in the UK.
ResPublica's ideas are founded on the principles of a post-liberal vision of the future which moves beyond the traditional political dichotomies of left and right, and which prioritise the need to recover the language and practice of the common good.[4]
Notable Publications
Recommendations from ResPublica's first publication, 'The Ownership State', were endorsed by both Conservative and Labour parties in the run up to the United Kingdom elections of 2010.[5][6]
ResPublica's report "To Buy, To Bid, To Build: Community Rights for an Asset Owning Democracy", launched on 15 November 2010, listed strategies for privatising under-performing public sector built assets.[7][8][9] Greg Clark MP, Minister of State for Decentralisation at the Department for Communities and Local Government, spoke at the launch, which was hosted at NESTA with the support of the Development Trusts Association.[7]
On 13 February 2012, ResPublica published "Re-energising Our Communities: Transforming the energy market through local energy production".[10] Its recommendations are directly reflected in the Energy Generation (Planning and Right to Invest) Bill, which was introduced in March 2012. Media coverage of the paper included Scotland on Sunday,[11] The Ecologist[12] and Business Green.[13]
On the day of the publication of ResPublica's paper "Military Academies: Tackling disadvantage, improving ethos and changing outcome", David Cameron expressed his interest and support for the publication, saying during PMQS: "We shouuld empower our cadet forces to expand and perhaps to go into parts of the country where they have not always been present. The link that my hon. Friend makes between them and schools is a very good idea, which we should promote and support."[14] The report was covered in The Telegraph.[15] and Sky News[16]
In July, ResPublica's recommendations for Military Academies were endorsed by the Labour Party.[17][18]
In February 2013, ResPublica published "Marriage:Union for the future or contract for the present".[19] Ahead of its launch, David Burrowes MP endorsed its findings.[20]
As part of the report ‘The Community Renewables Economy’, ResPublica submitted evidence to the Energy and Climate Change Committee’s Local Energy consultation, and to the Department for Energy and Climate Change ‘s (DECC) Community Energy call for evidence.[21]
In June 2013, the report “Risk Waiver: Closing the protection gap for consumers and opening the credit flow for providers” was launched in parliament, and covered in The Guardian.[22]
In July 2013, Most Reverend Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, launched ResPublica’s report “Holistic Mission: Social Action and the Church of England".
In November 2013, the motion “to move that this House takes note of the July 2013 report of ResPublica ‘Holistic Mission: Social Action and the Church of England’", which was proposed by the Bishop of Leicester, Lord Tim Stevens, was debated in the House of Lords.[23]
