"Replay" is the lead single from American singer Zendaya's self-titled debut album, Zendaya. The song was composed by Tiffany Fred and Paul "Phamous" Shelton, and was released on July 16, 2013 - while its premiere was on July 12, 2013[2] - as the first single of her self-titled debut album entitled Zendaya and released through Hollywood Records. The song debuted at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 40. As of January 2014, "Replay" has been certified platinum for selling 1,000,000 copies in the US.

Composition and release

"Replay" has a length of three minutes and twenty-nine seconds.[3] Musically, "Replay" is an electro-R&B song with influences from glitch and dubstep.[4][5][6] Zendaya's vocals in the song expands two octaves from the low note of E3 to the high note of E5.[7]

The song was composed by Tiffany Fred and Paul "Phamous" Shelton. "It's a very special song. I think it's very different and unexpected for me because I feel like it's on a higher level production wise,"[8] Zendaya said. "It's one of those songs that's creating its own lane or genre. I don't think it's pop, I don't think it's hip hop, I don't think it's R&B. I don't even know where you would consider it because it kind of mixes that pop sound beat with a very R&B kind of melody" she says in an interview with Radio Disney. Zendaya describes the single as not basic pop music, but having an urban twist to it.[9]

Promotion

Zendaya released a preview of "Replay" on July 12, 2013 and released it to Radio Disney the next day. On July 16, 2013, she officially released "Replay" on iTunes. In August 2013, Zendaya released two previews of the music video.

Zendaya appeared on 106 & Park and The View. She also had a Radio Tour all around the United States to promote her singles.

Critical reception

Zendaya been compared to Aaliyah, Rihanna, Ciara and Cassie for her vocals. PopCrush said "The chorus will get stuck in your head whether you like it or not, and with good reason: It’s incredibly simple. “Yeah / Wanna put this song on replay / I can listen to it all day / I can listen to you all day.” The single debuted at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at number 40 as of January 2014. It also peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Songs chart.

Commercial performance

The song debuted at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 40, becoming Zendaya's first top 40 hit.
