Sources in late October 2011 disclosed that Amudhan was working on his second film, which too was supposed to be a spoof. According to reports, the film was titled as Thalavali and was to feature look-alikes of lead Tamil actors Ajith Kumar and Vijay in the lead roles.[3][4] The claims were denied by Amudhan, who officially announced his second film as Rendavathu Padam ten days later, clarifying that the film would not be a spoof.[5] Photo shoots began by the end of November 2011.[6]

Prior to the announcement, Amudhan had already selected Vimal, Aravind Akash and Richard for the lead roles; the lead actresses had not been finalized then.[7] In December 2011, Vijayalakshmi was chosen for the lead female role.[8] Sanjana Singh, who had previously appeared in Renigunta, was also selected to play another role in the film.[9] The crew revealed that the film would be shot at Chennai, Hyderabad, Pondicherry, Malaysia, Bangkok.[10] The satellite rights of 'Rendavathu Padam' have been bagged by Sun TV for an undisclosed price.[11]
