Rencontres d'Arles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rencontres d'Arles is a summer festival of photography, founded in 1970 by the photographer Lucien Clergue, the writer Michel Tournier and the historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette. It takes place between July and September in Arles, a town in Provence, southern France. The present curator is François Hébel.

The festival shows mostly new materials and has a great impact at the international level. In 2010 the Rencontres was visited by 73,000 spectators, of whom there were 11,000 foreigners, 5,000 professionals and 9,000 students.[1] From 2002, corporate identity is designed by Michel Bouvet.

The shows are often produced in collaboration with museums and other cultural institutions, both French and foreign. The exhibitions take place in various places of the town. Some of them, such as small ancient churches and former factories, are open to the public only during the festival.
