Introduced in 1967, the Model 788 was designed by Wayne Leek, the manager of Remington's research and development department.[3] The rifle featured a bolt with nine locking lugs and a straight grain walnut stock. Remington claimed that the rifle had a fast lock time at 2.5 milliseconds.
