Rangi Chase (born 11 April 1986 in Dannevirke, New Zealand) is a professional rugby league footballer who currently plays in the Super League competition for the Salford Red Devils. He attended famous Maori school Te Aute College in 1999 before moving to Australia where he attended Keebra Park State High School. He has played at representative level for the New Zealand Māori, New Zealand A's & Exiles. Chase was also the 2011 Albert Goldthorpe Medal Winner and was selected in the England squad for the 2011 Gillette Four Nations. On 4 October 2011 Chase was presented with the Man of Steel Award.Chase signed for the Salford Red Devils for a sum believed to be in the region of 115 thousand pounds on a 4 year deal.

Playing career

Chase played for Manawatu in the 2002 North Island Super 6 competition.[3]

National Rugby League

Chase started his career in the National Rugby League with Sydney team Wests Tigers, making his debut during the 2006 NRL season. At the end of the year, he moved to the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He played there for two seasons.

Chase was named for the New Zealand training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.[4] He represented the New Zealand Māori instead.

Super League

Chase joined English club Castleford Tigers side for 2009's Super League XIV, planning to link up in the halves with Brent Sherwin.[5][6]

During the 2009 season, Chase scored 10 tries and made more tackle busts than any other player in Superleague, earning him Castleford Tigers player of the year award.

On 21 August 2009, it emerged that Chase had signed a new four-year contract with the Tigers, lasting until the end of the 2013 season. He again played for the New Zealand Maori team in 2010.

On 27 September, it also emerged that Castleford Tigers held a conference meeting with Rangi about his career and landed an extra 2-year extension on to his current contract and is to be at the Castleford Tigers until the end of 2015 season.

In 2011, at Southport, Queensland, Magistrate Court Chase pleaded guilty to a charge of causing Grievous Bodily Harm and was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended.[7]

In the shock defeat to rivals Featherstone Rovers, he broke Tangi Ropati's jaw.

Chase was suspended indefinitely after an apparent breach of club discipline on the weekend of 24 June 2012.[8]

On 11 February 2013 he was charged by the Super League after a high hit on England team mate Zak Hardaker against Leeds Rhinos. He was given a 2 game ban for a grade B offence.

Chase has signed a deal to play for the Salford Red Devils in 2014 on a 4 year contract.

International

Rangi Chase was selected for the Exiles squad for the International Origin Match against England at Headingley on 10 June 2011,[9] Being named man-of-the-match in the Exiles' victory. Despite this, on 3 October 2011, Chase made himself available for selection for the English national side.[10] In 2011 he became the third consecutive Australasian import to win the Man of Steel award for Super League's player of the season.

He was selected by the team England management despite having played against them earlier in the year, drawing criticism from former player Garry Schofield.[11] However, Chase made it clear that he personally asked to represent England, as he found himself more "at home" in Castleford than New Zealand.

England

2011

Rangi Chase made his debut in the warm up test against France where he won the Man of the Match award. His next game was in the 42-4 win against Wales in the 2011 Four Nations. He also played against Australia at Wembley Stadium and against former schoolmate Benji Marshall when England beat New Zealand 28-6. Controversy also arose when Chase's cousin Isaac Luke bent his leg back in a tackle during the win over New Zealand: Luke, who was put on report for the incident by referee Matt Cecchin, later apologised to Chase for the play. Rangi was the scrum half in the 30-8 loss to Australia in the 2011 Four Nations final.

2012

Rangi was selected to play against the Exiles in Game 1 of the International Origin, this was the first time a player has represented both teams in the Origin, after Chase received Man of the Match in the 2011 game for the Exiles. He also featured in the 2012 Autumn International Series final against France.

2013

Chase was part of England's 2013 Rugby League World Cup squad. He featured in the warm up against Italy which England lost 15-14. Rangi was then selected at Stand Off for the group games against Australia, Ireland and Fiji. He also featured in the Quarter Final against France. He scored against Ireland (1 try).
