Ragini Khanna ( Hindi - रागिनी खन्ना )is an Indian actress who works in Indian television shows and films.[1] She started her acting career with Imagine TV's critically acclaimed drama series Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi (2008–09). She followed it with a lead role in Sony TV's romantic-comedy show Bhaskar Bharti (2009) and received appreciation for her comic timing. She went on to play the female lead in Star Plus' lighthearted family drama Sasural Genda Phool (2010–12),[2] which earned her appreciation from both critics as well as the audience. She also won the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role in 2010, which established her as one of the leading actresses of television.
Besides television, Khanna has also ventured into acting in films. She debuted in films with the 2011 Bollywood comedy-drama Teen Thay Bhai, which was a Box office flop.[3] Two years later, she made her debut in Punjabi cinema with the comedy film Bhaji in Problem (2013).
In addition to acting, Khanna has appeared in several reality television shows also. She participated as a main contestant in the 4th season of the popular celebrity dance series Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa[4] and got eliminated at 9th position. She then hosted its 5th season along with Manish Paul. She briefly returned to the series in its 6th season also, as a supporting contestant ("Teen Ka Tadka") . She has also been a contestant in shows like Star Ya Rockstar (2011) and Welcome - Baazi Mehmaan-Nawaazi ki (2013). She has performed several times in Comedy Circus also.
Khanna is also a regular stage performer and has gained good experience as an anchor too. She has hosted various television events, award functions and reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 (2012) and India’s Best Dramebaaz (2013). Having done so, Khanna has become one of the most high-profile television celebrities in India.
Early life
Ragini Khanna was born in Mumbai to Praveen Khanna and Kamini Khanna. Her elder brother Amit Khanna is also an actor. She did her schooling at R. N. Shah High School and received a Masters degree in Commerce at the University of Mumbai. She has also learned singing from Prakash Prasad, son of Jagannath Prasad. Khanna initially wanted to become a singer but she eventually became an actress.[5] As a child, she used to go to the shooting spots with her maternal uncle Govinda Arun Ahuja, who is a Bollywood actor.
Khanna started her career with print and television ads. Her first assignment was a short print ad which was shot in Panvel. Khanna then worked in about 25 advertisements, including popular campaigns like Amul Cool Café and Godrej, before starting acting.[6]
Career
Television
In early 2008, Khanna made her acting debut with Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi on NDTV Imagine.[7] She played the role of "Ragini Sharma", an ambitious girl who aspires to be a super model, so that she can fulfill her dreams and see her family happy, rich and successful.[8] The show ended on February 12, 2009.
In 2009, Khanna was cast for the lead role in Bhaskar Bharti, an Indian adaptation of the popular Argentine comedy show Lalola.[9] She played the role of the man "Bhaskar" (played by Eijaz Khan) who transforms into the woman "Bharti" (played by Khanna), as a result of being cursed by one of his ex-girlfriends. Khanna also appeared as a guest in an episode of 10 Ka Dum hosted by Salman Khan. Khanna won an amount of 10,00,000 rupees along with Ratan Rajput and donated the money for charity.[10]
Khanna started working in Sasural Genda Phool in early 2010 which was produced by Ravi Ojha Productions and launched as a prime time show on Star Plus. Khanna portrayed the role of an unconventional daughter-in-law, "Suhana Kashyap", wife of the character played by Jay Soni.[11] The show ran for two years on the channel. Meanwhile, Khanna took part in a celebrity gossip show on Imagine TV called Meethi Choori No.1.[12] She was also seen as a guest along with Ratan Rajput, Rashmi Desai and Sneha Wagh in Imagine TV's reality show Big Money: Chota Parda Bada Game, which was hosted by actor R. Madhavan.[13] They won and donated Rs. 10,00,000 to Project Nanhi Kali's educational trust.
Months later, Khanna appeared in a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 4 along with many other TV actresses.[14] Khanna helped in winning 12,50,000 rupees for "Sahyog Vikas Sanghthan". In December 2010, Khanna participated in the 4th season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, an Indian dance show based on the original UK show Strictly Come Dancing. In one of the episodes, Khanna gave a blindfold performance with her choreographer Neerav Bhavlecha.[15] She was finally eliminated at 9th position on 14 February 2011.[16][17] Khanna also appeared briefly in an episode of Koffee with Karan that featured Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan as guests. Khanna was shown in a video in which several television actresses were seen praising Mukerji and Balan.
Later in 2011, Khanna participated in a celebrity singing reality show Star Ya Rockstar which aired on Zee TV.[18] She was eliminated on 19 November 2011 at the 6th position. She also appeared in the promotional title-song video of Ruk Jana Nahi. After Sasural Genda Phool's end in April 2012,[19] Khanna's next project was the 5th season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, this time as a host alongside Manish Paul.[20] She also did a cameo role in Life OK's show Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki.[21][22]
Khanna was also offered the role of "Mohini" in Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev[23] and the lead role in Housewife Hai...Sab Jaanti Hai[24] but she didn't work in these shows due to various reasons . Khanna has also appeared several times as a guest performer in the popular stand-up comedy show Comedy Circus, together with many other celebrities including Shweta Tiwari, Rajesh Kumar and professional comedians like Kapil Sharma,[25][26] Rajiv Nigam[27] and Rehman Khan.
In January 2013, Khanna was seen in Life OK's cookery show Welcome - Baazi Mehmaan-Nawaazi ki (Indian version of Come Dine with Me).[28][29][30] She was a contestant in its first week alongside Sanaya Irani, Nigaar Khan, VJ Andy and Manoj Tiwari. Khanna then hosted Zee TV's talent-hunt reality show India’s Best Dramebaaz, produced by Essel Productions, along with Rithvik Dhanjani. The show had children between the ages of 5–12 years as the participants and was quite popular among the masses throughout its original run on the channel.[31]
Films
In 2011, Khanna made her official Bollywood debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's comedy film Teen They Bhai. Her co-stars in the film were Om Puri, Shreyas Talpade and Deepak Dobriyal. The film was a Box office flop and mostly received negative reviews from the critics.[32][33]
In 2013, Khanna worked in Akshay Kumar's first Punjabi film production, Bhaji in Problem.[34] The film had an ensemble cast of Gippy Grewal, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Khushboo Grewal along with Om Puri and Harbhajan Singh.[35] The film was released worldwide on 15 November 2013 and received mostly positive reviews from the critics and audiences as well, although Khanna's role was criticized for lacking the screen presence required to play a lead actress[36] Overall, the film earned a good box office collection.[37] Khanna was also initially signed for another Punjabi film Double Di Trouble [38] but was replaced by Kulraj Randhawa.[39]
As of January 2014, Khanna has two upcoming projects. She will be seen in Tollywood actor Ravi Teja's upcoming film Power, which marks her official South Indian debut.[40] Khanna is also scheduled to feature in Pushpendra Mishra’s comedy film Ghoomkethu opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui.[41]

Anchoring and stage performances
Khanna has hosted various award functions and events on television. In 2010, she hosted Diwali Dilo Ki, a special Diwali celebration event by Star Plus along with Karan Patel.[42] It was aired on 30 October 2010 on Star Plus. In 2011, Khanna hosted the music launch of the Bollywood film Ra.One along with Vivan Bhatena. It did telecast on STAR Plus on Sept 18, 2011 in a grand way.[43] Khanna also shook a leg at the event with Shahrukh khan on the foot tapping number Chammak Challo from the film. Ragini then hosted another installment of Diwali celebration events by Star Plus for the year 2011. The event titled Diwali Rishton Ki Mithas aired everyday for half an hour from 17 October to 21 October on Star Plus. Ragini hosted various segments of the event with Shaheer Sheikh and Rupal Patel.[44][45]
In 2012, she co-hosted a special event titled as Sau Saal Cinema Ke along with Karan Tacker, Bharti Singh, Krishna Abhishek, Shruti Ulfat. The event was meant to celebrate and pay fitting tribute to the glorious Indian cinema in the quintessential Star Plus style for completing 100 years. It was aired on 15 December 2012 on Star Plus.[46]
Khanna has been a regular stage performer as well. She has performed in various award functions like STAR Parivaar Awards, BIG Star Entertainment Awards, Sau Saal Cinema Ke and many other events and shows. She has also performed at the Wembley arena in London along with Jay Soni.[47]
Ramp-walks
Khanna has also walked the ramp many times at various fashion shows. On 26 November 2012, Khanna was one of the celebrities who took to fashion stylist and designer Neeta Lulla’s fashion ramp for the Global Peace Initiative ‘Walk for Peace’ campaign which was organized to spread the message of peace and harmony on the day Mumbai was attacked four years ago.[48] Khanna walked the ramp along with many leading actors and actresses of television at the launch of Telly Calendar 2013 which was launched by Marinating Films on 10th Jan 2013.[49] She featured in the calendar too.[50] Khanna also walked the ramp with her mother Kamini Khanna for the social cause `Beti` during Gitanjali Gems show on the inauguration day of India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) in Mumbai on August 4, 2013.
TV commercials and endorsements
Khanna is a brand ambassador of Emami Vasocare body lotion produced by Emami company.[51] She is also the brand ambassador of 'Beauty with Astrology' science organization founded by her mother, Kamini Khanna. They have also launched an early morning spiritual and wellness radio show titled 'Seher' on 92.7 BIG FM with Ragini as brand ambassador.[52] In 2010, Khanna was roped in as one of the judges in Frito-Lay India's consumer campaign titled "Kurkure Spend Time with Family", alongside Juhi Chawla and Jaspal Bhatti.[53]
Khanna was also the brand ambassador of "Mix n Drink" which was launched in 2011 by Catch foods.[54][55] She appeared in various advertisements of the brand also.[56] Khanna has also appeared in many other TV commercials like Wella Kolestint,[57] Prill washing liquid,[58][59] Manikarn Jewellers[60] and many others. Khanna recently featured in the activation campaign "My Roohafza story" launched by Hamdard division which features Ragini talking about Rooh Afza moments that are worth reminiscing.[61] The actress will soon feature in six ad commercials that will be directed by well-known Bollywood director Shimit Amin.[62]
Personal life
Khanna's parents are Praveen Khanna and Kamini Khanna. She is the 2nd child of her parents. Her elder brother, Amit Khanna is also an actor and has worked in serials like Yeh Dil Chahe More.[63] Her mother, Kaamini Khanna is a writer, music director, singer, anchor and founder of 'Beauty with Astrology'.[64] She is the granddaughter of classical singer Nirmala Devi and popular 1940s actor Arun Ahuja. She is also the niece of Bollywood actor Govinda and the cousin of Krushna Abhishek (actor, stand-up comedian) and Soumya Seth (TV actress).
Ragini is a pure vegetarian. She is also a trained singer and dancer. She has learned Kathak and had been doing Jive, Salsa, Belly dancing, Cha-cha-cha and Bollywood style dancing as well.[65] She has been learning classical singing since childhood and has also learned to play the Tabla, Sitar and Tanpura. Her mother tongue is Hindi but she also speaks English and also knows regional languages like Gujarati, Punjabi and Marathi.
In the media
Khanna is known for her frank and assertive nature, and has been outspoken on issues including the commercialization of festivals such as Navratri.[66] During a shoot of Star Ya Rockstar, the actress reacted defensively when fellow contestants expressed their preference for the performance of another contestant, Chhavi Mittal.[67] In an interview after her elimination from the show, Khanna said, "I always motivated Chhavi whenever she was nervous before her performance. I think I have a certain aura which prompts people to like me. I am always nice to people who are nice to me. I don't throw tantrums for any rhyme or reason."[68] During Life OK's culinary show Welcome, Khanna and her co-contestant Nigaar Khan were seen arguing during the show.[69][70] Khanna vented her anger against the channel through her twitter account, where she claimed that in an episode of the show, Khanna's mother's name was mispronounced in a demeaning fashion.[71][72]
Awards and nominations
Khann won her first award for Best actress in a debut role in 2009 at the 15th Lions Gold Awards for her role in Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi. Khanna did not receive any award or nomination for her work in Bhaskar Bharti but she won various awards for her performance in Sasural Genda Phool including Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role at the 10th Indian Telly Awards in 2010. She has received nominations at almost all major award ceremonies of the Hindi television industry.
