Career

Raghunath Paleri (Malayalam:രഘുനാഥ് പലേരി) (February 7, 1954) is an award winning Indian novelist, and screenwriter from Kerala. He started writing at an early age and became an established writer by the time he was in college. His works were published in almost all the popular magazines in those days. He was passionate about Cinema and wrote his first screenplay for the movie Nseema at the age of 24. Later he joined the prestigious Navodaya studio, the cradle of the modern Malayalam Cinema and worked as a Screenplay Writer and as an Assistant Director. His association with Navodaya Appachan, his son Jijo resulted in the first 3D movie in any Indian language, My Dear Kuttichathanin 1984. He wrote the screen play for My Dear Kuttichathan. The movie is a milestone in the history of Indian cinema. The well crafted screenplay blended an ethnic folklore fairytale with a contemporary realistic life story of a super hero. The movie was a huge success in Malayalam and was later remade to other regional languages in India without any change in the basic story or screenplay and became an instant hit across India. The movie was later re-released twice in 1997 and 2011 and both the occasions the movie was very well appreciated and was accepted by the audience. The repeated success proves that the story which was based on human emotions had a universal appeal, irrespective of the cultural as well as the time period differences. The same studio produced Raghunath Paleri's debut movie as a director titled Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare. The film won him the prestigious state award for best debutant Director. The movie also won awards for best Cinematography, Editing, Art Direction and Sound Recording. It is the first film of popular actress and award winning film maker Geetu Mohandas and she won the state award for best child artist for Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare. It was a remarkable film in Mohanlal's career and it was one of his best performances on screen. The movie also marked the debut of the music director Mohan Sithara. It was a path breaking film and audience were surprised with the freshness in the cast and the overall look and feel of the film. 'Onnum Muthal Poojyam Vare' is one of the few movies were the protagonist of the film appears almost by the end of the film and the overall film revolves around the telephonic conversation between a child and a stranger. The background score and sound design were made the part of the story telling. The movie was very well received by the critics as well as the masses. Paleri was supposed to do another movie with Mohanlal after the success of 'Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare'. Though Mohanlal was very excited and eager to work with Raghunath Paleri once again but time constraints and prior commitments of the actor forced him to abandon the project. Raghunath Paleri and Mohanlal worked together again after a gap in notable movies Pingami, Vanaprastham and Devadoothan directed by Sathyan Anthikad, Shaji N Karun and Sibi Malayil respectively. Raghunath Paleri's collaboration with Sathyan Anthikad is considered to be one of the most successful associations in the history of Malayalam Cinema. Their first movie Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu was a huge hit and the success story continued with Mazhavil Kavadi. The back to back super hits made Raghunath Paleri one of the most sought after writers in Malayalam Film Industry. In early 80s, Shaji N. Karun requested him to write a screen play for him based on the infamous Rajan case which happenned during the The Emergency (India) era. The screen play for Piravi was a team work and Paleri wrote the screenplay along with Shaji N Karun and S Jayachandran Nair. Paleri took historical references and based the screenplay on his relation with his own father. The movie Piravi was recognised and applauded all over the world including one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, Cannes Film Festival. Later Shaji associated with Raghunath Paleri for Swaham and Vanaprastham. He has also worked with Rajasenan for a handful of movies and Meleparambil Aanveedu is the most successful among all. The movie was literally a laugh riot. The writer politely refused the request of the director Rajasenan to make a sequel to Meleparambil saying he cant even think of making the sequel without the great Malayalam actors Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Narendra Prasad and the great actress Meena, since they have passed away. Raghunath Paleri's films talks about common people and their lives. The writer believes in the concept of universal love and his movies are based on human values and emotions. He was one of the early adopters of social media platforms. He regularly writes blogs and has got a huge fan base in facebook and he is in constant touch with each of them. There he is 'Raghunath Paleri' the individual (Raghuvettan as he is fondly called) and not the Film Maker or the Screenplay Writer. His posts on diverse topics celebrate the spirit of life amidst the chaos and struggles in day to day life. He deliberately tries to stay away from the glamour and glitz of the filmdom and choose to be among the common and the ordinary people from all walks of life. You may not be surprised to spot him traveling along with normal ordinary people in a train or bus or hanging out with his friends in a local restaurant in Kerala.
