Rüschegg

Rüschegg is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is also a Swiss Reformed Church parish.

History

Until 1860 Rüschegg was part of Guggisberg.[3]

Geography

Rüschegg has an area of 57.4 km2 (22.2 sq mi). Of this area, 41.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 49.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (6.5%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]

It includes the villages Heubach, Hirschhorn, Gambach and Graben. Rüschegg lies in the Alpenvorland at the foot of Ochsen (2,188 m (7,178 ft)), Bürglen (2,165 m (7,103 ft)) and Gantrisch (2,175 m (7,136 ft)), which form the southern border of the municipality.

The neighboring municipalities are Rüeggisberg, Rüti bei Riggisberg, Därstetten, Oberwil im Simmental, Guggisberg and Wahlern.

Demographics

Rüschegg has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 1,612.[1] As of 2007, 2.6% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 1.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.4%), with English being second most common ( 0.6%) and Albanian being third ( 0.6%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 47.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (13.6%), the FDP (11.1%) and the Green Party (10.5%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 27.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 55.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 17.1%. In Rüschegg about 70.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Rüschegg has an unemployment rate of 1.96%. As of 2005, there were 184 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 76 businesses involved in this sector. 57 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 19 businesses in this sector. 177 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 35 businesses in this sector.[4]
