Quinceañera (Sweet 15), is a Mexican telenovela, produced by and broadcast on Televisa in 1987, starring Adela Noriega and Thalía. Quinceañera was the first telenovela to talk about substance abuse, date rape and gangs, and is considered to be the first telenovela made for teenagers.[1][2]
Quinceañera was named by the Associated Press as one of the ten most influential telenovelas ever to air in Latin America,[2] and Univision tlnovelas viewers named it one of their all-time favorite Mexican telenovelas.[3] In 2010, Quinceañera was placed #7 on the People en Español's "20 Best Telenovelas" list,[4] and in 2012, Terra named it as one of the fifty best telenovelas of all-time.[5]
The telenovela received TVyNovelas Award for Best Telenovela, in 1988.
Plot
Maricruz (Adela Noriega) and Beatriz (Thalía) are classmates and best friends. Maricruz is from a working-class family, while Beatriz's family is very wealthy. They are both 14 and excited about their quinceañera parties and growing up to become women.
Pancho (Ernesto Laguardia), a mechanic's apprentice, and Memo (Sebastián Ligarde), a gang tough, are attracted to Maricruz. Maricruz is immediately disgusted by Memo and she eventually accepts the love of Pancho. Memo attacks Maricruz, but before he could rape her, she faints. He lets her believe that he did indeed rape her. She feels violated and feelings of inadequacy result; she now believes she is defiled and Pancho will not want her.
At the same time Gerardo, Maricruz's brother, starts dating Beatriz partly due to the pressure that Maricruz's mother has put on their children to raise their social class. Beatriz gets pregnant, to the initial horror of her family; they later support her. Both girls realize that the passing to womanhood was not what they expected.[1]
