Quatre Bras

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quatre Bras (French for "four arms") is a common name given to a crossroad in French.

More specifically it refers to the crossroad of the Charleroi-Brussels road (currently named N5) and the Nivelles-Namur road South of Genappe in Wallonia, Belgium. On June 16, 1815 near the crossroads of Quatre Bras, the Battle of Quatre Bras (part of the Waterloo Campaign) was fought between contingents of the Anglo-Allied army and the left wing of the French Army.

It is also the name of other crossroads; notably in Tervuren between the Avenue de Tervueren (Brussels-Tervuren road) and the Brussels outer ring R0. The latter is usually referred to as Vier-Armenkruispunt (in Dutch) or Quatre Bras de Tervuren, (in French) and is a key location for car traffic around Brussels.
