Qazigund (Kashmiri: क़ाज़ीगुंड (Devanagari), قاضی گُنڈ (Perso-Arabic)), known as the Gate Way of Kashmir, is a town and a notified area committee in Anantnag district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Qazigund is located at 33°38′N 75°09′E / 33.63°N 75.15°E / 33.63; 75.15.[1] It has an average elevation of 1670 metres (5478 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Qazigund had a population of 4307. Males constitute 62% of the population and females 38%. Qazigund has an average literacy rate of 99%, higher than the national average of 64.8%, male literacy is 99%, and female literacy is 80%.In Qazigund, 8% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Some of the prominent villages in Qazigund are Vessu, Bonigam, Kurigam, Shampora, Panzath. Y.K.Pora, Churat.

Kurigam:Kurigam is the nearest village from Qazigund only half a Km. It is famous for the Sufi saints Hazrat Baba Habib Shah Sahab, Hazrat Baba Sa'd Shah Sahab and Hazrat Baba Mueen Shah Sahab.All three of them are brothers,whereas Hazrat Baba Habib Shah Sahab and Hazrat Baba Mueen Shah Sahabs blessed graves are in Kurigam but Hazrat Baba Sa'd Shah sahabs blessed grave is in between Shampora and Kurigam.A shrine is built on Hazrat Baba Sa'd Shah Sahab and Hazrat Baba Habib Shah sahab but there is no shrine onHazrat Baba Mueen Shah Sahab.Locals say whenever a shrine was built onHazrat Baba Mueen Shah Sahab,the next day it would have fallen down,so currently there is no Shrine on his blessed grave.Locals say there are four more brothers of these three Sufi Saints, who lived in nearby villages and now only their blessed graves are found there. Hazrat Baba Habib Shah sahabs Urs is celebrated every year according to kashmiri months(which comes in march). He is the most famous and respected Sufi saint of local area. Actual Birth date and Death date of Hazrat Baba Habib Shah sahab is unknown. Another thing for which Kurigam is known is Prakash Ram-a famous Poet.

Gousia Arabic college trust is the prominent Religious organization in the Qazigund town founded by Sufi Saint Mir Syed Hafizullah Andrabi, Qadri, Naqshbandi(R.A).[citation needed]

Churat. Churat village is 3 KM from the Qazigund which is known as the Gate Way of Kashmir, is a Village Under notified area committee in Kulgam district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.Churat is also famous for the Dargah of Famous Saints Hazrat Syed Asim and Syed Qasim Simnini Bukhari, Who are the brothers of the Hazrat Syed Hussuan Simnini Rahamet-U-Llah Allah ( Kulgam). These saints visited whole Kashmir to spread the Islam. The another dargah of the same Sufi Saints is located at of Bank of Dal Lake on Nishat Shalimar Road Srinagar. Masjid: Five Majids are Old Hanfia Jamia Masjid, New Hanfia Jamia masjid, Masjid Astaan Pora, Masjid Abu Bakr Siddiq and Masjid Firdusi. Transport:- Churat is connected to Islamabad, Kulgam and Srinagar by road and railway. There is a train service from Qazigund to Srinagar four times a day and is connected to KULGAM by road. The famous bus services from churat is called " Churat Gaad". Chuart has good literacy rate. most of the youth are well educated, doing the Govt, PVT jobs. running own business, farming, and fruit growers. Churat has 3 Major schools as "Iqra Public Hanfia School" (DISE) Govt Girls Middle School" and” Govt Boys Middle School". Caste:- Caste present in this village are as Mir, Bhat, Teli, Rather, Tantry, Lone, Wagay, Beigh, Itoo, Dar, Khan, Sheikh and Shah. However some people have changed the caste.From Shah to Syed and Shah to Khan.

Transport

Qazigund Railway Station

Qazigund is connected to Anantnag and Srinagar by road and railway. There is a train service from Qazigund to Srinagar four times a day.And is connected to KULGAM by road.Railway station is in Kurigam.

Qazigund is connected to Banihal on the other side of Pir Panjal mountain by road.

Banihal railway tunnel or Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel, is a 11 km long railway tunnel under the Pir Panjal mountains to connect Qazigund railway station to Banihal railway station. It was bored in late 2011 and the railway tracks are being laid. It became operational by the 26 Dec 2012. It is India's longest and Asia's second longest railway tunnel and reduced the distance between Quazigund and Banihal to only 11 km.[3]
