Pyramid Rock Festival

The Pyramid Rock Festival was an Australian New Year's Eve camp-out rock music festival at Ventnor on Phillip Island.^[1] The original festival in 2004 was organised by local resident, Angus Cameron, and his two cousins.^[1]

Beginning as a single day, from its second year it was run over two nights with two stages – the Main Stage, and the Pharaoh's Annex. As its name suggests, the Main Stage hosted the major local and international acts, while the Pharaoh's Annex featured lesser-known local acts, and in the later evening, the more dance-oriented acts of the festival. There was also a variety of market stalls. With declining attendees- stemming from the embarrassment of the 2009/10 festival where organisers had shown amateurish planning for wet weather, resulting in the cancellation of all bands 3 hours prior to midnight and the failure to even provide a New Year countdown for the paying public- the festival was cancelled for 2013 and as of September that year its promoters were "exploring options for the festival to return in 2014".^[2]

Originally held on 31 December as a one-day festival, it was organised by local Phillip Island resident, Angus Cameron, and his two cousins.^[1] They had approached the Bass Coast Shire council with the proposal which took two years to develop.^[1] Cameron recalled that they had underestimated the cost of establishing the festival.^[1]

Phillip Island musician Christy Mahon organized a team of youths to attend the festival where they managed to collect $600 in one night for victims of the tsunami disaster.^{[citation needed]}

2005

The 2005 event was held over the hottest new year’s eve on record (based on Melbourne weather) ^{[citation needed]}. The event was heavily criticized for poor organisation, including:

• giant queues of cars to the distance of 15 kilometres past the San Remo-Phillip Island Bridge to get to and from the festival;
• an inadequate supply of food vendors causing waiting times of up to two hours to get food, of which only a small variety was available; and
• organisers failing to provide rubbish facilities, forcing campers to dump their rubbish at their camp sites.

The 2006 festival was the largest to date, with estimates of the crowd being as high as 15,000. The catering facilities were largely improved for 2006, along with a wider variety of merchandise and general stalls.

The initial line-up was announced on Monday the 10th of September, with the second line-up announcement being made on Tuesday the 23rd of October. The Black Keys and Fun Lovin' Criminals were also due to play, but cancelled in late December.

After almost three days of running as per scheduled, and with just three hours before New Year’s Eve 2009, The Pyramid Rock Festival was hit by a severe electrical storm that ripped across Phillip Island, although a much bigger storm hit the Fall's Festival that same night, which amazingly carried on incident-free.

The west facing Main Stage of the festival bore the full force of the extreme Westerly that brought fierce winds, heavy rain, lightning and thunder to the finale of the three day Phillip Island music festival. The Main Stage suffered major damage to vital sound, lighting and effects systems that could not be restored in time to bring in the New Year. All effort was made to reinstate the appropriate and acceptable standard of stage production levels to the Main Stage area without success, prompting festival organisers arranging to re-locate the four remaining main stage headline acts for the night from the Main Stage to the Pharaoh’s Annex tent (Empire Of The Sun; Grinspoon; The Butterfly Effect; & Van She).

However, with venue safety analysis ongoing, organisers and bands in conjunction with security and emergency services personnel decided that moving the acts to the Pharaoh’s Annex would be unsafe.
