Puteri Indonesia (literally translates into "Princess of Indonesia"), or also known as Miss Universe Indonesia, is the biggest beauty pageant in Indonesia that sends the winner to the Miss Universe pageant. The pageant was established in 1992 and considered the oldest pageant in Indonesia, although the first Miss Indonesia, Wiana Sulastini who was crowned as Miss International Indonesia 1960 to be crowned in 1960 and participated at the Miss International 1960.
History
Puteri Indonesia was starting to choose the winner for Miss Universe in 1995, but by 1996, the winner was forced to withdraw from competing at the Miss Universe pageant by Mrs. Tien Suharto, who was the wife of the late second president of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto.
- 2004: By Suharto overthrown, in 2005, Puteri Indonesia resumed to send the winner of Puteri Indonesia 2004 to compete at the Miss Universe 2005.
- 2005: Additionally, Puteri Indonesia winner was competed at the Miss Universe 2006 and the 1st runner up was sent to the Miss World 2005.
- 2006: Puteri Indonesia lost the franchise of the Miss World.
- 2007: The three winners will compete at the Miss Universe, Miss Asia Pacific International and Miss International.
- 2008: Puteri Indonesia lost the franchise of the Miss Asia Pacific International because the pageant did not held since 2007.
- 2008 - 2010: The two winners will compete at the Miss Universe and Miss International pageant.
- 2011: The three winners will compete at the Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Asia Pacific World.
- 2013: Puteri Indonesia lost the franchise of the Miss Asia Pacific World.
- 2013: The four winners will compete at the Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Supranational and Miss Grand International.
- 2014: Puteri Indonesia lost the franchise of the Miss Grand International.

In addition to crown the new Puteri Indonesia (Miss Universe Indonesia), at the end of election night event Puteri Indonesia will elect The Princesses as determined by the judges.

- The 1st Runner-up declared as Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan (Environment Ambassador) or Miss International Indonesia and will compete at the Miss International pageant.

Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan
The 1st Runner-up, since 2007, the 1st runner-up will hold the title of Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan as Environment Ambassador. Except in 1992-1996, Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan is selected through a special award and in 2000 - now Putri Indonesia Lingkungan directly princess named to the 1st Runner-up Putri Indonesia and in 2005 represented Indonesia at the Miss World 2005. Since 2008 the title will compete at the Miss International pageant.

Puteri Indonesia Pariwisata
The 2nd Runner-up, will hold the title of Puteri Indonesia Pariwisata as Tourism Ambassador, is currently not a representative of Indonesia in any pageant since 2007. The 1st runner-up, since 2007, the 1st runner-up will hold the title of Puteri Indonesia Pariwisata. Except in 1992-1996, Putri Indonesia Pariwisata is selected through a special award and in 2000 - now Putri Indonesia Pariwisata directly princess named to the 2nd runner-up Putri Indonesia and in 2007 represented Indonesia at the Miss International 2007. Since 2008 - 2010 did not compete again at any international pageant. Since 2011 the title will compete at the Miss Asia Pacific World until 2012 edition. Due to conflict at the pageant, since 2013 the title will compete at the Miss Supranational pageant.

The 3rd Runner-up, will hold the title of Puteri Indonesia 3rd Runner-up. Since 2013 for the first time, the title will compete at the Miss Grand International pageant. In 2014, Puteri Indonesia lost the franchise of the Miss Grand International.
