"Pusong Bato" is a single released by the Filipino singer Aimee Torres in 2003.[1] After becoming a viral hit, the record was re-released by Star Records in 2013 in the album "The Original Pusong Bato" and on the official soundtrack to the Filipino television series Juan dela Cruz.
Background and release
Pusong Bato "Heart of Stone" was written by Renee "Alon" Dela Rosa in 2002. Manuel S. Torres bought the rights to Pusong Bato and nine other songs for 140,000 pesos. He later gave Pusong Bato to his daughter Aimee Torres.[2] The song was included on Torres' 2003 album, which was repackaged by Star Records in 2012.[3]
Aimee Torres considered legal action for Alon's failure to credit its original singer.[2][3] Aimee was offended when Dela Rosa re-recorded and re-issued the song. According to Torres, "Actually, there could have been no problems had Alon given credit to Aimee as the original singer of 'Pusong Bato,' which he did not!"[2] However, Dela Rosa, who was featured in a GMA Network's show Magpakailanman, has always been recognized as the song's composer.[4] According to Dela Rosa, his wife's infidelity inspired him to write the song.[4][5]
Viral spread
After Angelito Paudan uploaded Lexter Jimenez' version to YouTube, it went viral. A video was uploaded on YouTube showing Nigerian Maritime students at the University of Cebu singing the song.[6] According to their professors, the students were taught the song so they could build a rapport with the locals.[6] There were also several versions in different local dialects circulating on YouTube, such as Bisaya, Ilocano, and Kapampangan. A music video parody was also uploaded by "The Kulaog Band," who were featured in a magazine show, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho including the "Beki version" (gay version) and the Reggae version.
Other media
Several artists have performed the song, including international Filipino singer Charice during her guest appearance on Kris TV,[7][8] dramatic actor Jericho Rosales in It's Showtime[9] and Jed Madela.[10]
In 2013, Season 1 winner of Pilipinas Got Talent' Jovit Baldivino re-released the track; it is now being used as the theme song for Juan dela Cruz.[11]
