Pusan National University (PNU, Korean: 부산대학교) is not only one of the most prominent and major Korean national universities, along with Seoul National University but also one of leading universities in South Korea. Busan is also called Pusan because Pusan is latinized Busan before 2000. So, PNU located mainly in Busan is often called BNU (Busan National University). Established in May 1946 (three months earlier than SNU founded on August 1946), it is the first national university in South Korea since Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule in 1945, and is widely regarded as one of the top national schools in the country.

PNU as an national university established by Korea government has no university history under Japanese rule unlike other national colleges founded by the Japanese Government General of Korea for raising the students as intellectuals serving Japanese rule without resistance. That commemorates university history during Japanese colonial rule not only defames the identity as the national university of Korea but alse justifies the purpose of college foundation to raise Korean as subjects of Japanese empire under Japanese colonial rule by the Japanese Government General of Korea. Pusan National University, first established by Korea government since Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule, is operated as a national tax of Korean Citizens. PNU symbolizes the identity of national university in the Republic of Korea. Hyowonians(PNU alumni) are very proud of this point.

Pusan National University has been continuously one of top university in the number of CEO's at Korean major companies. In 2013, PNU provided the third highest number of CEO's at top tier Korean companies. Continually ranked among one of top 500 world universities by ARWU World University Ranking and QS Top Universities Ranking, Pusan National University is one of only ten Korean universities ranked in both ARWU World University Ranking and QS Top Universities Ranking in 2010.[1] [2] In QS Top Universities Ranking 2010, Pusan National University is ranked in top five in social sciences and management,[3] sixth in engineering and technology,[4] sixth in life science and medicine,[5] and ninth in arts and humanities [6] among Korean universities. Pusan National University is one of only five Korean universities ranked in four subject areas in QS Top Universities Ranking 2010.

History

Pusan National University (PNU) was founded on May 1946 in Busan, the Republic of Korea's second largest metropolis by the Korean government. Although the University started initially with just two faculties, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Fisheries, since then, it has grown into a major research level institution covering all the major disciplines within academia. Today, the University enjoys its reputation as one of top universities in Korea. PNU has since grown to be widely regarded as one of the top National Universities in the country along with Seoul National University. As of 1998, graduates of PNU included 89,632 bachelor's degree holders, 12,755 master's degree holders, and 2,399 doctoral scholars. PNU now comprises 12 colleges and general graduate schools and 6 professional graduate schools, and it contributes to the development of the nation and the world by producing prominent experts and talented leaders.
