Purity Ring are a Canadian electronic music duo originally from Edmonton, formed in 2010.[5] The band consists of Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (instrumentals).[5][6][7]

Background and history

Megan James and Corin Roddick, aged 25 and 22 respectively in April 2013,[6] formed Purity Ring in 2010.[5] Both grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. James played piano and Roddick played drums prior to the band's inception, however neither currently play them as their primary instrument for Purity Ring. During live shows, Roddick uses a custom-built, tree-shaped instrument to drive both live sound and lighting.[8] Additionally, during live appearances both wear clothes custom designed and sewn by James.[8] James uses written work which she originally did not intend to release to the public for many of the band's lyrics.[6][9]

The duo were originally two of several members of the band Born Gold (previously called Gobble Gobble).[8] While on tour with Gobble Gobble, Roddick began experimenting with electronic production and beat-making. James was asked to sing on a track called "Ungirthed", thus forming Purity Ring.[8] The song was released in January 2011.[10]

On April 3, 2012, it was announced that Purity Ring were signed by record company 4AD worldwide and Last Gang Records in Canada.[11] Later the same month the band announced their debut album, Shrines, subsequently released on July 24, 2012; they also debuted the first single from the album titled "Obedear".[5] On June 20, 2012, Purity Ring released another single from the album titled "Fineshrine".[12]

On October 9, 2012, Purity Ring released a sequel to their single, "Belispeak," titled "Belispeak II" as a collaboration with rapper Danny Brown.[13]

The same day that Purity Ring opened their online merchandise store, they released a cover of Soulja Boy's "Grammy" on February 11, 2013 with a free download.[14] The fans' reaction to the release of the cover was so strong that it crashed the website servers due to too many requests to download.[15]

In July 2013, their studio album Shrines was short listed for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.[16][17]

In September 2013, Purity Ring remixed Lady Gaga's "Applause."

The single "Fineshrine" became known in the UK for its use on a very.co.uk advert.[18]
