Name Origin
"Punta" is the term used by the people in that barrio to refer to the sugarcane stem cuttings that are used to plant sugarcane. During the rainy season, the stem cuttings are planted directly into the wet soil, while in summer, they are placed in flat beds and kept moist for weeks to induce germination. Because that part of Calamba was then mostly planted to sugarcane, preparation of "punta" for planting was a major activity in the barrio, thus, the name. In Tagalog, the word punta also means:
- point (púnta)
- go (puntá)
- yoke (puntâ).
Also, punta also describes a kind of music genre originated from West Africa.
