Pune Metropolitan Area consists of Pune city and Pimpri-Chinchwad town. This stretches from Dehu Road in the west to Hadapsar in the east and up till Katraj in the south. The New Pune International Airport is proposed for this region near Chakan. This area is regarded as a Global IT Center[citation needed] with a number of IT and Software companies. The area also has many automobile industries. The Population is 5,060,000.[citation needed]

Geography

This area is located in the valleys of several hill ranges. To the south there is a hill range over which the Katraj Ghat is located. To the west there are the hilly regions of Dehu Road. To the east lies the nearly flat land mass of the Deccan Plateau. To the north there is the Indrayani river. To the north at Rajgurunagar (Khed), another hill range is located.

Rivers

The Pavna, the Mula, the Mutha rivers flow through this area. The Indrayani river is the northern border of this region. This region also has the confluence of river Pavna and Mula. The Mula further flows to meet the Mutha at the sangamwadi area of Pune city. These combined river after the confluence is further called the Mula-Mutha river.

Hills

There are many hills in this area as this region is surrounded by three side by mountains. The Sahyadri to West and two subranges of Sahyadri one in north and other in south. The famous hills in this region are Vetal Tekdi, Fergusson Hill, Parvati, Gul Tekdi and Chaturshingi Hill in Pune and Durga Tekdi in Nigdi. The Katraj Ghat which cuts the Katraj Hill is to the south of this area. The two Katraj tunnels the old tunnel on Katraj Ghat and the new tunnel on NH 4 are also located to the south of this region.

Industries

The last fifty years have seen major expansion of heavy and light engineering and other manufacturing companies in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area in the western part of the metro region.

Automobile

The Pimpri-Chinchwad area has major automobile companies like Premier Limited, Mahindra Navistar, Bajaj Auto, BEL Optronic Devices Ltd, TATA Motors (formerly TELCO), Kinetic Engineering, Force Motors(formerly Bajaj Tempo), Volkswagen, FIAT, General Motors and Daimler Chrysler.

IT & Software companies

In the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, industries like IBM India, KPIT Cummins, Tata Technology, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Geometric, L&T Infotech etc. have set their plants in the Hinjewadi and Talwade area. While in the Pune region Neilsoft, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, Microsoft Corporation, Syntel, BMC Software, Compulink, Barclay Tech Center have set their centers in the Magarpatta Cyber City, MIDC Software Technology Park, Marisoft IT Park, Kumar Cerebrum IT Park, EON IT park, Kharadi IT park and the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park (Hinjewadi Phase 1 to 3) Accenture PVT LTD in Blueridge tech park Phase1, Druva software Pvt Ltd SB road, Accenture PVT LTD Magarpatta

Heavy Industries

Heavy industries like Hindustan Antibiotics, Forbes-Marshall, Thyssen Krupp, Alfa Laval, Sandvik and KSB Pumps are located in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, while Kirloskar Brothers Limited, Kirloskar Oil Engines, Kirloskar Pneumatic Co Ltd, Whirpool, LG Group have been established in the Pune area. Other Industries

There are a few soft drink companies like Frito Lay and Coca Cola located in the region.

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited buses well connect Pune to Pimpri-Chinchwad. Suburban trains connect this region to Lonavala and Talegaon. There is also a proposal for the Pune Metro to increase connectivity between the two cities. The Pune BRTS is an under constriction plan which operates currently on Katraj - Swargate - Hadapsar route. Further this plan is expected to be extended from Katraj to Kharadi Corridor, Karve Road and Paud Road. Similar plan has been sketched for Pimpri-Chinchwad city, called Pimpri Chinchwad BRTS. This has four roots Nigdi - Dapodi, Aundh - Ravet, Nashik Phata - Wakad and Kalewadi - Dehu.

Rail

The Pune Metro rail will connect both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad well with the first phase connecting Swargate - Pimpri-Chinchwad (Underground from Swargate to Range Hills and elevated further) and Vanaz - Ramwadi (Elevated). Later this roots will be extended in second phase Swargate - Katraj / Hadapsar (Elevated), Pimpri-Chinchwad - Nigdi (Elevated) and Ramwadi - Kharadi (Elevated). This phase will also introduce new root from ASI to Aundh (Elevated) and from Vishrantwadi to Swargate (Underground). In the third phase new root form Agricultural College to Warje (Elevated) will be introduced. Pune Monorail will run along the Ring Road (30 km) and from Warje to Kharadi (22 km).

Road

Private buses and the Maharashtra state transport buses connect this region to the entire Maharashtra and Goa region. Some buses also connect this region to neighboring states. The national highways connect this region to Nashik, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other cities and towns on these roads. The MSRTC connects the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad to all towns and nearby villages in Maharashtra and Goa. There are three main bus terminals in the city namely, Swargate, Pune Station and Shivajinagar. Also MSRTC buses run to cities in neighbouring states.

Future Upgrade

A ring road has been proposed to this metropolitan area. The proposed ring road will help to avoid traffic congestion in this area. Also the Wagholi to Shikrapur flyover is proposed to prevent traffic congestion on the Pune - Ahmednagar State Highway. Other projects such as the Shivajinagar Station – Swargate Skywalk and Pune BRTS will also help to improve transport facilities in this area.

Rail

The Pune Railway Station connects this area to the entire country. The Mumbai - Chennai railway line is the main railway line which passes through this station. This station also is the origin of the Pune - Bangalore railway line. The Pune - Lonavla Locals and Pune - Daund - Baramati Passengers are important transport for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune District. Passengers from Pune to Satara, Kolhapur, Miraj serve for villages between Pune and Saswad Road

Future Upgrade

Due to an increasing demand for suburban transport there is also a proposal to increase a sepetate line for Pune Suburban Service and also to increase Passenger trains to Daund, Baramati and Saswad Road. Even Pune - Daund suburban trains are proposed for villages on Pune - Daund Section. There is also a proposal to increase the frequency of Pune - Lonavla locals to 30 min in peak hours and 45 min in non-peak hours. There are proposals to increase two terminal on Pune - Lonavla and Pune - Daund section of central railway for Subruban trains.

There is also a proposal of bullet train service between Pune and Ahmedabad.

Air

Currently the Pune International Airport at Lohegaon serves as an air connection. Currently only two international flight operate from Pune International Airport. The first one from Pune - Mumbai - Dubai. This service operates on three days (Monday, Thursday & Friday) only and is operated by Air India Express. The second service is operated by Lufthansa (PrivatAir) from Pune to Frankfurt. This operates six days in a week (except Saturday). Domestic flights are operated to New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Shirdi, Lucknow, Patna, Indore, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The domestic airlines operating from Pune are GoAir, Indian, IndiGo, Jagson Airlines, Jet Airways, JetLite, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet.

Proposed International Airport

There is also a proposal for a new airport near Chakan. This airport will be gateway of Pune District and Pune Division to the entire world. This will be useful for trade, tourism, public transport and mostly for agricultural and floricultural trade. This will have facilities for domestic as well as international passenger and cargo transport and will be the largest airport in Maharashtra and second largest in India after Ahmedabad's Fedara International Airport.

Cricket

Cricket is the most popular game in the Pune Metropolitan Region. The Jawaharlal Nehru cricket ground in Pune is the home of the Maharashtra cricket team. There is a plan of constructing a new cricket ground at Gahunje village. The IPL team of Pune is Sahara Pune Warriors and will participate in 2011 Indian Premier League. So this ground will host IPL matches as home ground for Pune. This ground is expected to host major international matches and also of the ICC Cricket World Cup in future.

Field Hockey

Fied hockey is played in Khadki and Dapodi region of Pune Metropolitan Area. The are two stadiums for field hockey. One is in Khadki region of Pune known as CAFVD Sports Stadium and other in Pimpri-Chinchwad constructed by PCMC known as PCMC Hockey Stadium. Pune Strykers is a field hockey team of Pune. This team will participate in the World Series Hockey, India's domestic hockey league. Pune Strykers will be based at the PCMC Hockey Stadium

Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex

This is a multi-sports games village situated at Balewadi village. The major events held here were the 1994 National Games of India and 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. Along with this, the 2008 World Junior Table Tennis Circuit and 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship were conducted here. The 2009 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship for Women was played over here where India ended up 5th place.
