Provine High School
Provine High School is a public school in Jackson, Mississippi. It is part of the Jackson Public School District.
Provine High School, also called "Ram City", serves students in grades 9–12 in the West Jackson area. Students from subdivisions such as Northwest Hills Terrace, The Queens, Country Club Hills, and Westchester Hills attend the school. The principal of Provine High School is Laketia Marshall-Thomas and assistant principals are Dr. Gloria Johnson, Mr. Wille Collins, and Mr. Brodewick Cochran. Provine High School is located in the western quadrant of Jackson at 2400 Robinson Street. For the past fifty-one years, Provine High School has served the constituency of the West Jackson community through its various academic and non-academic programs and activities. Provine boasts of having several extracurricular offerings for students, which have placed the school on a par with the best schools in the state. Extracurricular programs include S.E.C.M.E, the Robotics team, the choir, the band, the drill team, the cheerleaders, the academic challenge bowl team, the Mock Trial team, JROTC, FCA, FCCLA, FBLA, as well as a variety of sports teams.

Demographics
There were a total of 1,179 students enrolled in Provine High during the 2006-2007 school year. The gender makeup of the district was 49% female and 51% male. The racial makeup of the school was 100.00% African American.[1]
History
In 1992, Provine High School was designated a service-learning school. September 1956, Provine High School has been instrumental in producing its share of doctors, lawyers, judges, educators, political leaders, engineers, and a myriad of other professionals.[citation needed] Since that time, various organizations in the school have participated in innumerable service-learning projects. Some of the projects include collecting and disseminating canned goods to the needy, collecting toiletries and pillows to distribute to the elderly in nursing homes, tutoring and mentoring elementary students at local elementary school, assisting Habitat for Humanity with building houses for the destitute, and participating in Walk-A-Thons. The mission at Provine High School is to provide a well-rounded educational foundation to enable all students to become service-oriented lifelong learners and positive contributors in an ever-changing society.[citation needed]
Programs
Clubs and organizations
Provine offers extracurricular activities such as Academic Quiz Bowl, Art Club, Drama Club, Future Educators of America, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Student Council, and over 20 more programs. Provine High School also host a Robotics Team. It is the only high school in Jackson with a robotics team. The sponsors of the Provine Robotics team are Mr. Redmond Malone and Ms. Patricia Daniels. The robotics team is composed of 29 students,and three teachers from Provine High School. Approximately half of the team is female. The student makeup includes 2 freshmen, 9 sophomore, 8 juniors, and 10 seniors. The team's sponsors include: Delphi, NASA, Jackson State University, Entergy, Geodessy Survey, and Jackson Medical Mall. The Provine JROTC is also one of the programs offered at the school. This program includes three JROTC instructors and no more than 60 students involved in the program.
Performing groups
There are five performing groups at Provine High School. These groups include the "Spirit of Provine" Cheerleaders, The "Soul of Provine" Choir, The "Essence of Provine" Dance–Drill Team, Provine Flag/Colorguard Corp, and The Provine High School Marching Band. The band has more than 100 students. Provine High School Marching Band has been one of Jackson's best bands in the city.[citation needed] In 2006, Provine High School Band was nominated as the best band in Jackson. The band has also been an all-superior band for a few years now. As of 2009, the band had upgraded to over 100-120 band members in the band and 150 along with other members. They have also been known for having the best percussion section, Percussion of Destruction (P.O.D) The director of the band is Mr. Carlton Williams.
