Providencia rettgeri (commonly P. rettgeri), is a Gram negative bacterium that is commonly found in both water and land environments. P. rettgeri is one of the 5 species found in the genus Providencia, with Providencia stuartii, Providencia alcalifaciens, Providencia rustigianii, Providencia rettgeri can be incubated at 37°C in nutrient agar or nutrient broth. It was first discovered in 1904 after a waterfowl epidemic.


Identification

After being classified an Enterobacteriaceae , the Motility, Gas from Glucose, Hydrogen Sulphide Production, Lactose Fermentation, Swarming, Acid from Xylose and Mannitol tests are all used to accurately identify Providencia rettgeri

Role in Diseases

Providencia rettgeri can cause a number of opportunistic infections in humans and can be found in the human gut. It has been known to cause urinary tract infections and traveller's diarrhea.
