Prostitution in Zanzibar

Prostitution in Zanzibar is illegal under Tanzanian law.[1] However, prostitution, is still widespread.[2] The main causes of this are poverty, lack of job opportunities and culture.[2][3] There are many prostitutes in Zanzibar from other countries including Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia and Somalia.[2] Reports show that an increase in the number of cases of HIV and AIDS are growing at an alarming rate in Zanzibar.[4] This is thought to have been added to by large numbers of tourists entering Zanzibar and fuelling demand for prostitutes.[4][5]
