Late Sri KAMI SETTY KONDIAH SRESTY was a devoted and a great Vysya here, one day Knayaka Parameswari dawned into his dream and asked her to build a temple in this town. Accordingly a vast temple for her was built in the year 1890. A.D. From then the “Shala” as it is popularly known expanded traditionally[10]
- Sri Rameshwaram Temple (also known as Mukthi Rameswaram, Dakshina Kasi and Ramalingeswaram): Possibly the oldest temple in Proddatur which is on the banks of Pinakini River. Sri Ram in order to get rid off his sin, in killing Ravana the king of Lanka, who was a Brahmin decided to install a Siva Lingam at this place. He had to consecrate the Siva Lingam made by him with the sand as Hanuman who was sent to Kashi to procure the Siva Linga could not return within the asupicious time. The Siva Linga is called "Saikata Lingam", stands 56 inches high and still has the finger prints of Lord Sri Rama on it. In order to please Hanuman, Sriram installed another Siva Linga brought over by him from Kashi a few paces away and opposite to Saikata Lingam. The Kshetrams are, therefore, called Ramalingeswara Kshetram and Hanuman Kshetram. The Temple is protected with high walls and are having two doors. According to the inscriptions, Sri Krishna Devaraya got constructed a five storyed Gopuram over the temple. The beautiful images of several Gods sculptured around the Gopuram speaks of high efficiency and calibre of the sculptors of those days. According to the legend, Sri Ram consecrated the Saikata Lingam before the rise of the Sun and hence the place is called Proddatur. There is a saying that the people who start their pilgrimage towards Varanasi (Kasi) should visit Rameswaram in Proddatur, to complete their holy journey. - Origin of the town's name: The origins of the town’s name is not definitely known, but there are 4 possible origins:
- Sanskrit origin – The belief is that Sankara sent down a small flow of water from his rounded plaits (Jatas) where he stored the Holy Ganges, to this town of “Bhradhnapuri” which later was named Proddatur meaning almost the same in Telugu. Bradhna is Sanskrit for proddu in Telugu, which means Surya.
- Lord Rama’s stopping place – According to one legend, the origin of this town’s name is related to the great Indian epic Ramayana. The legend states that Lord Rama was on his way back to his homeland Ayodhya from Lanka after killing the demon Ravana. At the onset of dusk, Lord Rama decides to halt on the river bed of the river Penna. At sunset (which translates to poddu in Telugu, the local language) he asked his wife Sita to find a place for them to rest for the night. It is believed that this placed was henceforth called Podduturu or Proddatur.
- ”Bush Town” – Another possible origin of the town’s name is from the large bushes which used to cover the land. In Telugu, these are known as podalu. It was, hence, named 'podalu ooru' (podalu town), which became ‘Podalakuru’, and later ‘Proddaturu’.
- Sunflowers facing the sun – Yet another possible origin relates to the sunflowers which used to be quite common in the area. Sunflowers turn to face the sun during the day and poddu thirugudu in means tuning the face around in day time. This morphed into "Proddatur".
