Priya Dutt Roncon (born 28 August 1966) is an Indian politician. She was first time elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Mumbai North West constituency in Maharashtra on 22 November 2005, representing the Indian National Congress party. She is currently representing Mumbai North Central constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha since 2009.

Early life and education

Dutt is the daughter of the late Bollywood actor and politician Sunil Dutt, and actress and politician Nargis. Both her parents were elected to represent the Indian National Congress, and her father was a government minister. She is the sister of actor Sanjay Dutt, and Namrata Dutt. Along with her sister, she published a memoir, entitled Mr and Mrs Dutt: Memories of our Parents, in 2007.[1]

She received her B.A. degree in sociology from Sophia College, Mumbai University.

Career

After university, Dutt worked in television and video and studied at The Center for the Media Arts in New York.[2]

During a tense political period in 1992–1993, Dutt worked with Muslim refugees in Mumbai. She reported receiving threatening telephone calls and public harassment.[3]

In 2005, despite a low voter turnout, she won her seat in the Lok Sabha by a margin of 172,043 votes over a rival candidate from the Shiv Sena. Dutt received considerable media attention for this victory, partially on account of her famous family and the fact that she had given birth to her first child a few days before the election.[4]

Since her election, Dutt has been appointed secretary of the All-India Congress Committee.

Dutt also runs a charity, The Nargis Dutt Memorial Charitable Trust. Among other projects, the charity has focused on bringing kitchen sets and medical aid to flood victims in the state of Bihar, following the disastrous flooding in 2008. Dutt went to Bihar with her husband to visit refugee camps and distribute equipment.[5]

Recently Dutt spoke out her views on the sex workers at Kamathipura and asserted her pro-legalisation stance regarding prostitution. She is also in talks with the chief minister of Maharashtra, Shri Prithviraj Chavan for the same.[6]

Personal life

She is married to Owen Roncon. Roncon is a partner in Oranjuice Entertainment, a music promotion company, and Fountainhead Promotions & Events Pvt Ltd, a marketing firm.[7] The couple has two sons, Siddharth and Sumair.
