History

The original Prix Louis Lumière, named for the film pioneer Louis Lumière, was first given in 1935, awarded by a jury of the Academie Nationale. The prize was discontinued in 1985.[1] After an 11 year hiatus the new Prix Lumière was initiated in 1996 by producer Daniel Toscan du Plantier and Newsweek's Paris correspondent Edward Behr. Their idea was to replicate the Golden Globes given by the foreign press in Hollywood.[2]
