Principal (Portuguese, meaning principal; Capeverdean Crioulo: Prinsipal), is a village located in the north central part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, it is located north-northwest of the island capital of Praia and southeast of Tarrafal. The village is linked by the Tarrafal-Assomada Road as well as the Tarrafal-Praia Road. The Serra da Malagueta lies to the south.

Geography

The area around Principal is very rocky, bushy and grassy. Rocky mountains surround the town, which is filled with traces of trees. Farmlands are in the valley areas, particularly within the village. The average farm size is very small, with many farms being only the size of a basketball or volleyball court.

Information

Most of the older homes are made of stone, mud and brick. Income and living standards are in the low to middle range. Local crops include bananas, pineapples, livestock and other fruits and vegetables. Others work in shops, ports and other businesses. Electricity and phone lines did not reach the community until the late 20th century, and service is still spotty.
