Prince Edward is a station of the MTR rapid transit system in Hong Kong. It is located in Northern Mong Kok, Kowloon, under the intersection of Nathan Road and Prince Edward Road West. The station is named after this road. The station's livery is Pale Purple.

History

Although the Kwun Tong Line tracks had already been laid for the station in 1979, Prince Edward was not opened until the Tsuen Wan Line opened on 10 May 1982, since the station was designed principally for the purpose of interchanging to ease the expected overcrowded interchange at Mong Kok Station. While the latter was designed to aid in transferring passengers to the Tsuen Wan Line for cross-harbour transport, Prince Edward acts as a faster interchange for passengers wishing to go north on the Tsuen Wan Line rather than head towards Hong Kong Island. Only a week after the station opened was the concourse finished, thereby giving access to the station from street level.

Location

Prince Edward Station and Mong Kok Station are the two closest stations in Hong Kong. They are only about 400 metres apart and the train takes less than one minute to travel from one station to the other.

Station layout

Prince Edward is an anti-directional cross-platform interchange station between the Tsuen Wan Line and the Kwun Tong Line. The stations to the north are Sham Shui Po and Shek Kip Mei on the Tsuen Wan Line and Kwun Tong Line respectively. Both lines stop at Mong Kok station to the south. With this, passengers on the Tsuen Wan line may use this station to cross the platform to the Kwun Tong Line going back to Yau Ma Tei although this isn't mentioned on the public address system as the Tsuen Wan Line already passed Yau Ma Tei and is only two stations away from Prince Edward.

Passengers travelling from East Kowloon can walk across to platform 1 to board the Tsuen Wan line EMUs bound for West Kowloon, Kwai Chung and Tsuen Wan.

Passengers travelling from West Kowloon, Kwai Chung and Tsuen Wan can walk across to platform 3 to board the Kwun Tong line EMUs bound for Tiu Keng Leng.

Entrances and exits

Despite Prince Edward's location, all exits are within one block of Nathan Road, stretching from Prince Edward Road in the south, to Playing Field Road in the north.^[1] This demonstrates MTR's view of Prince Edward as an interchange rather than a destination since there are only seven exits; neighbouring Mong Kok has fourteen.^[2]

Cross-border bus services

Many cross border buses terminate near Prince Edward MTR Station. Travellers to Shenzhen, Dongguan or Guangzhou can exit the station through Exits A, C2 and D for the stops at Playing Field Road or Portland Street.
