The President of Zimbabwe is the head of state of Zimbabwe. The office was first held by Canaan Banana following its independence in 1980. From 31 December 1987 to 11 February 2009 the President was also the head of government, as the position of Prime Minister was abolished by Banana's successor, Robert Mugabe. Following political negotiations in 2008 and 2009, the position of Prime Minister was restored, and the President again became solely the head of state.

Following the Zimbabwean constitutional referendum, 2013, the president serves a maximum of two five-year terms (this does not have retrospective effect).[1]

History of the office

The office of the President of Zimbabwe was established in 1980, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. A Methodist minister, Canaan Banana, became the first President and he served until 1987, in a mostly ceremonial role. The real power was vested in the Prime Minister, Robert Mugabe. In 1987, Mugabe succeeded Banana as President after he revised the Constitution to make himself Executive President.
