Preneet Kaur (born 3 October 1944) is an Indian politician, currently serving as Minister of State for External Affairs and a member of Indian National Congress.[1] She represents the Patiala constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha. She is the wife of ex-Chief Minister of Punjab Capt. Amarinder Singh.

Personal life

She was born in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh to Satinder Kaur and Gian Singh Kahlon. She attended St. Bede's College, Shimla and graduated from Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla. She has one sister, Geetinder Kaur. In October 1964, she married to Maharaja of Patiala Capt. Amarinder Singh and hence got the title of Maharani.[2] The couple has a son Yuvraj Raninder Singh and a daughter, Jai Inder Kaur.

Political career

She started her political career as a member of 13th Lok Sabha in 1999, representing the Patiala constituency. Since then she continue to represent Patiala till present.[2][3] During first two terms in parliament, she served in various committees such as Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution, Empowerment of Women, Public Undertakings, Water Resources and Consultative Committees in Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. In 3rd term she was made Union Minister of State and given portfolio of External Affairs.

Prior to her political career she volunteers with the Indian Red Cross. She started Sanjeevani an institute in Patiala for differently abled children.
