Pre-university course

Pre University Course, popularly known as PUC is an intermediate course of duration two years conducted by state education institutions or boards in India. A person desiring admission to any Indian university must pass this course. The course can be considered a degree bridge course to prepare students for university education. The admission to this course is based on marks obtained in SSLC or standard 10 or bridge course which is equivalent to standard 10.Indian education system follows 10+2+3( 4 or 5) pattern, i.e.; number of years required for one to obtain a Bachelor's Degree. This Pre-University Course (PUC)is also known as PDC (Pre Degree Course), + 2 or Intermediate course. The state of Karnataka conducts PUC examinations in PUC II for university admissions.This has mainly three streams in their programs as science, commerce and arts as the optional. [1]

Generally three streams of studies are followed, Art, Commerce and Science. Students desiring to study professional courses in Karnataka must pass this exam in science stream and also qualify in Common Entrance Test conducted by CET cell of government of Karnataka. This is required to get admission (merit seats) in colleges offering professional courses like medicine,engineering,dentistry,nursing and pharmacy.

Recently, the Karnatka PUC Board attempted to make the First year PUC exams public in an attempt to filter out bad students and improve overall score. (As only about 40% of students pass the exam, 60% of students who write the exam fail, and only about 1.5% get above 85 as their overall percentage)

The colleges offering pre university course are known as PU Colleges or Junior colleges in India.

Courses after PUC

Students from Science stream. Students who have completed from PUC in science stream can join for a degree course in nursing or pharmacy or agriculture or engineering or medicine. They can also join B.Sc. in pure science. The admission to these courses depends upon marks scored in PUC exams conducted by the institutes or state board.

Students from Commerce stream. Students of commerce stream have option of joining B.Com or B.B.M degree (graduate) programs of Indian universities. After graduation in commerce, They can do higher studies like M.COM or M.B.A or C.A. or ICWAI or Company secretary.

Students from Arts stream. Those who have passed Pre University Course (PUC) in arts faculty can opt for Bachelors degree in Arts (B.A) or Diploma in Education (DEd). Students can take admissions to Fashion designing conducted by National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFT).[2] There is also course in apparel manufacturing and knitwear manufacturing available for students of arts.).[3] After completion of B.A. one can study law or do Bachelors degree in education (BEd).
