Pothaturpettai is a panchayat town in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It has an area of 8.86 km2 [1]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Podhaturpettai, which is also spelled Podhattoorpet (normally referred to as Podaturpet) had a population of 18,698. But the population of Pothatturpettai on March 2013 is approximately 27,600. (Extrapolated from a population of 18,200 on December 30, 2010 and a population of 20,000 on June 15, 2011.) Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Podhaturpettai has an average literacy rate of 58%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 45%. In Pothaturpettai, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Occupation

Weaving is the major occupation of Pothatturpettai. People are engaged in Handloom and Power loom weaving. Besides weaving, agriculture is another occupation of the town with rice and sugarcane being the regular cultivation crops

Proximity

Pothaturpettai is near to the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Nearby towns include Thiruttani (22 km), Pallipattu(10 km) and Sholinghur (23 km) in the native state and Nagari (13 km) of the nearby state of Andhra Pradesh.

Recent Developments

Pothaturpettai saw remarkable developments in the recent years. [M. Arun Subramanian] is the incumbent Member of the [Tiruttani (State Assembly Constituency)|Tiruttani constituency], under which Pothatturpettai is covered. During the tenure of MLA Dr. E.S.S.Raman for 10 years the town saw developments such as conversion of the roads leading to Tiruttani, Pallipet and Sholinghur as State Highways, establishment of an electric sub-station to provide 24x7 three phased power supply to Pothatturpet and a full pledged government hospital with 34 beds were established. A bypass road is boon to the locality. Operators such as Vodafone, Aircel and Airtel provide mobile communications. Whereas government owned BSNL provides 3G and wired internet facility along with landlines.

Worship

Popular Hindu temples inside the Industrial town include Lord Shiva Temple, Lord Permual Temple, Sri Ponniamman, Sri Subramaniya Swamy, Sri Nagamman, Sri Kanniamman and Sri Gangai amman Temples. There is also a Church and a Mosque.
