Pornhub is a pornographic video sharing website - possibly the third largest porn video web site on the internet.[2] Launched in 2007 and based in Montreal, Canada, Pornhub is a free, ad-supported website, which allows its users to view professional pornography, in addition to amateur pornography. It is one of the most popular pornographic websites active.[citation needed] Pornhub also has offices and servers in San Francisco, California, Houston, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana and London, United Kingdom. In March 2010, Pornhub was bought by Manwin which owns numerous other porn websites.[3]
History
Viewers
As of 2009, three of the largest porn sites "RedTube, YouPorn and PornHub -- collectively only make up 100 million unique visitors.[4]
Copyright infringement claims
In 2010, Mansef Inc. and Interhub, the owners of Pornhub, were sued by the copyright holding company of the pornographic film production company Pink Visual, Ventura Content, for the copyright infringement of 95 videos on websites, including Pornhub, Keezmovies, Extremetube, and Tube8.[5] According to Ventura Content the 45 videos were streamed “tens of millions of times”[6] and they claimed the piracy threatened the "entire adult entertainment industry."[7] Porn 2.0 sites such as these are seen as posing notable competition for paid pornographic websites and traditional magazine and DVD-based pornography.[8][9][10]
Breast Cancer Fundraising
In 2012, the website launched a "Save the Boobs!" campaign for the month of October for breast cancer awareness and research. For every 30 large-breast or small-breast videos viewed, the website offered to donate a penny to breast cancer research.[11][12]
After the Susan G. Komen Foundation refused to be publicly associated with the effort, Pornhub announced that they would seek another breast cancer charity as beneficiary.[13]
Celebrity content
XBIZ.com explains that according to TMZ, in 2011 "PornHub.com...sent to a letter to Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch offering $5 million for the rights to put the Kim Kardashian sex tape on its site for free".[14]
In 2010, Melissa Rivers, who was dating Steven Hirsch of Vivid Entertainment, was sent a letter by PornHub.com "asking her if she and her Porn King boyfriend are interested in filming a tape for them". Part of the letter's reasoning was that "[our audience] is very curious to see not only how a 'Porn King' performs, but what turns HIM on!" It added that "she is "a sexy Jewish American Princess, and to date, there has never been a celebrity sex tape that exploited this genre."
Earsucker.com noted that "PornHub offer[ed] Demi Lovato $100,000 for [an] alleged sex tape" in 2010.[15] The letter included passages such as the following:
We are stunned, yet very excited to hear rumors that there may be a possible sex tape of you floating around! Now that you have turned 18, there are a myriad of possibilities for a young girl like you to make a fortune in the adult entertainment business...Knowing that you have had a tumultuous year, we are hoping that we can spread our Holiday cheer this season by offering you $100,000 for your tape and full model release.— PornHub[15]
In November 2013, Bellator MMA fighter War Machine along with his girlfriend Christy Mack started a verified account and began posting videos of them selves together under the account name WarMachineMMA.
