Podili is a Town and a Mandal in Prakasam district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Before British Rule its name was Prudhulapuri, meaning Head Quarters of the Universe, there is Purana reference to this related to Prudhu Chakravarthi.
In Podili a new area Viswanadha Puram was established by Viswa Natha Sarma who worked as a hereditary karanam of the area. During his period he encouraged the people to settle in Viswanadhapuram.(now called as v.n.puram).The people of this area established a statue in bus stand center for his work. The statue was recently renovated and reopened on ugadi 2010.
Podili was an assembly constancy until 1978 when it was abolished.
Now Podili rapidly expands with people coming from nearest villages such as Marripudi, Kuchipudi, Konakanamitla....
Podili (Prudhulapuri) : The Head Quarters of Universe
Saluvas ruled Podili in 14 and 15 the centuries. Saluvas known as Samburayas. Saluvas were soma vamsa and Athreyagothra. Nirmamaheswara swami (Lord Siva) temple is a very old and famous temple in Podili.
Sri Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Thirunalla at Podili Hills (It was known as Prudhulagiri and also called Podilikonda) is famous. Thirunalla happens in summer season.
The great Nayani Subbarao of Janmaboomi Book written with Telugu grammar compositions (Prescribed for IAS and Osmania University M.A(telugu) Author is born here.
Narthanasala a beautiful mythological play was authored by Sri Chilamakuri Venakata Krishna Murthy who was born here. That drama won accolades in nandi natakothsavam held in 2008.
Reaching Podili
State highway no: 53 from ongole to nandyal passes through podili.
The other main roads to darsi(20 km),kanigiri(30 km),markapuram(45 km),tangutur(62 km),giddalur(103 km), passes through podili.
Marripudi,a mandal town is on the road connecting podili - tangutur.
There are multiple ways to reach Podilikonda.(Prudhula giri).
One is by road from Podili 5 km and other is on foot from Marripudi 6 km. Recently ghat road was built from Marripudi to the holy hill.
This town is well connected by State Road Transport Corporation. It has a APSRTC Depot.
The nearest railway station is Donakonda(app 30 km).Donkonda is on Guntakal-Guntur line. Ongole railway station(50 km) which is on Chennai-Vijayawada main line. A new railway line from Nadikudi to Srikalahasthi has been sanctioned in Railway Budget 2012-2013 and this passes through Podili.
The Mahasivaratri festival is celebrated grandly with Chariot procession.
It is located in the centre of the district and has good road facilities.
The major draw back of this town is lack of good politician (good administrator) which is very much required for its exposure in the district as well as state.
This area has pedda cheruvu and chinna cheruvu, which can be converted into recreational spots, which were not under implementation.
