From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pneumocytes (pneumonocyte) are one of the cells lining the alveoli (or air sac) of lung. Two types of pneumocytes exist: Type I and type II pneumocyte. Type I pneumocytes makes up about 90-95% and are involved in the gas exchange between the alveoli and blood. Type II pneumocytes function is to secrete surfactant, which decreases surface tension within the alveoli.
