Plaza del Caribe is an enclosed shopping mall located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is owned by Empresas Fonalledas and it is the largest mall in southern Puerto Rico.[9]
Location and anchor stores
The mall is located at the intersection of Puerto Rico Highway 2 and Highway 12. The mall has over 140 stores and is anchored by Sears and JCPenney. Junior anchors include Caribbean Cinemas and Old Navy. There are several free standing restaurants on the mall property, including Romano's Macaroni Grill and PF Chang’s; LongHorn Steakhouse is due to open in the spring of 2013.[10] There is also a food court with 18 establishments.[11] There was a freestanding Circuit City on the mall for a brief time but closed after the company went bankrupt.
As of September 2013, the American department stores company Macy's was in the process of building a store at this location at a cost of $23.2 million.[12]
Mall design
Plaza del Caribe is notable for its sophisticated design, featuring artwork scattered throughout the mall, especially in its central atrium. Exterior entrances provide access to both its first and second floors.
Surrounding mall area
A new 10-screen Caribbean Cinemas multiplex opened during the December 2010 holiday season on mall property, but physically detached from the main mall structure. It is located immediately south of the main mall complex in an area bounded on the south by Autopista Luis A. Ferre (PR-52).[13]
A $2+ million P. F. Chang's opened on 13 May 2013. It brought 200 full- and part-time jobs to the area. The 7,400 square feet structure has a capacity for 268 patrons.[14]
Puerto Rico's first Sports Authority has plans to open at this mall in the fall of 2013.[15]
