Place Bourassa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Place Bourassa is a shopping mall located in the borough of Montreal North, Montreal, at the corner of Lacordaire Boulevard and Henri Bourassa Boulevard. The mall's anchor tenant are Super C and Zellers; the latter being currently the oldest Zellers (and sole remaining) store on the island of Montreal. Others tenants include Shopper's Drug Mart and The Source. The mall has 59 stores.

It opened in 1966 with Steinberg's and Hart as anchors. Steinberg's had operated on its own since 1960 before the rest of the mall was built. The mall expanded on Lacordaire Boulevard in 1971 to include Zellers and a few other small stores. When the Steinberg's supermarket company went out of business in 1992, the local was sold to Metro and by 1997, the Metro store was converted to its sister chain Super C. During the Great Ice Storm of 1998, the roof of the Zellers collapsed due to an excessive amount of snow and ice, resulting in the store's closure for several weeks. The Zellers store has been remodeled and expanded during the repairs. Hart closed around 1999 and was replaced by Cohoes. After Cohoes went bankruptcy in 2005, Bouclair succeeded over the lease. In 2011, the Bouclair store closed and the space has been taken by the Shopper's Drugmart store.

Ivanhoe and its descendant Ivanhoe Cambridge owned and managed the mall from its construction in 1966 to 2006. The mall is currently managed by Calloway Real Estate Investment Trust and owned at 98% by that company. Place Bourassa is located right next to its sister shopping centre Montreal North Centre, part of Calloway's lineup of self-branded "SmartCentres". Place Bourassa is Calloway's sole enclosed mall in Quebec.

The Zellers' store at the mall is not impacted by the Target acquisition of Zellers stores and will remain open.
