A pituicyte is a glial cell of the posterior pituitary. Their main role is to assist in the storage and release of neurohypophysial hormones.[1]
They generally stain dark purple with an H&E stain, and are among the easiest structures to identify in the region (pars nervosa of the posterior pituitary).[2][3]
Function
They are similar to the astrocytes/glial cells of the CNS.
Clinical relevance
Pituicytomas are believed to be caused by a neoplasm of pituicytes.
