Pirjo Honkasalo (born 22 February 1947) is a Finnish filmmaker. Although she has written and directed over a dozen films, Honkasalo is also an accomplished cinematographer, film editor, producer and actor. For her work in the film industry, Honkasalo has been recognized by winning 19 major film awards while being nominated for six more. She has had well over twenty retrospectives of her work world wide, acted as a member of several international juries and is actively giving international master classes.

in 1981 She co-directed Flame Top with Pekka Lehto and the film was chosen for the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.[1] In the 1990s she continued alone and turned to feature documentaries, directing the prize winning The Trilogy of the Sacred and the Satanic (Mysterion, Tanjuska and the 7 Devils and Atman). She has also directed The 3 Rooms of Melancholia, a story of how Russian and Chechen children were psychologically affected by the war. The film is still one of the most award-winning feature documentaries ever made. Her latest work is the feature film Concrete Night (to be released in 2013), based on a book by the same name by Pirkko Saisio.
