Pioneer Race Course
The Pioneer Race Course was a horse race track opened in March 1851 in the southern Mission District of San Francisco, California.[1]
This was the first race course in San Francisco.[2] At the time it was planned to be built, no streets existed in this neighborhood but later it appears to be bound by 24th St (formerly Park St), 26th St (formerly Navy St), Capp St & Alabama St.[3]
It was built by powerful local businessmen George Treat and his brother John Treat and later sold in the end of the 1800s for residential development. The positioning of this race course, as well as a later built race course also located in the Mission called Union Race Course appear to have affected the placement of the San Francisco-San Jose Railway.[4]
Historical Events
On May 21, 1854 the Pioneer Race Course was the site of a duel between lawyer George T. Hunt & his friend Numa Hubert, an ex-member of the California state assembly. On the third round George T. Hunt was shot in the abdomen and died.[5][6][7]
From 1862 until 1865 the Pioneer Race Course served a civil war encampment called Camp Alert for the 2nd California Calvary before they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.[8]
