Pieter Xavery

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pieter Xavery (born c. 1647 in Antwerp after 1674) was a Flemish sculptor. In 1670 he went to Leiden to study mathematics at the university. He may have been acquainted with Rombout Verhulst; however, his work tends more towards genre and caricature. Many of his works are in terracotta, while others are in ivory and bronze. A terracotta relief of the Flagellation of Christ, dating to 1667 and now in Bruges, is a rare example of religious work on his part. Xavery also executed some monumental pieces. Among these were stone decorations for the pediment and gables of the Gravensteen in Leiden; he also produced pediment sculpture for the house "In den vergulden Turk" and a collection of twenty-three judges and lawyers for the Vierschaar. All remain in situ; there is also a large collection of his work at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Xavery is known to have been active in Leiden until 1674, after which he disappears from record.

It is believed that Xavery was related to the sculptor Jan Baptist Xavery.
