"Piel Morena" ("Brown Skin") is a song written by Kike Santander, produced by Emilio Estefan Jr. and recorded by Thalía. It was released as the lead single of her fourth studio album En éxtasis, which was her international debut. This is her first single under the label EMI.[1] "Piel Morena" is considered one of her signature songs, reaching number one in over 25 countries.

The single becomes a huge Thalia's crossover hit, and also peaked at number seven on the Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks,[2] and number one on The Latin America United Chart. This song opened the door of her international career in Latin America and Europe. It became a popularity phenomenon in the latin market and intensified the comparisons of Thalia as the "Latina Madonna".[3] "Piel morena" was remixed by The Hitmakers,[4] Pablo Flores [5] and by Emilio Estefan Jr.[6] "Piel Morena" earned a nomination for Pop Song of the Year at the Lo Nuestro Awards of 1996.[7]

Commercial performance

"Piel Morena" received great attention of both critics and the public. With a huge media impact, the song suddenly accumulated a heavy airplay. The Latin community embraced Thalia's international debut, buying the physical single and making it a number one hit in more than 25 countries.

"Piel Morena" was a strong seller and went platinum in over 20 countries,[8] which was unprecedented for a Spanish-language single at the time.

Music video

In the song's music video, Thalia appears with many different and fancy outfits. The famous 'candlestick' and 'tap' bra continued to spread the development of Thalia's iconic image.

Directed by Daniel Gruener, it shows black and white and colorful scenes. The video also marked her debut on international music channels.

Although she has several previous music videos, many consider this her first global commercial video.
