Phuket (/pˈkɛt/ poo-KET; Thai: นครภูเก็ต,[1] Thai pronunciation: [pʰūː.kèt]) is a city located in the southeast of Phuket Island, Thailand. It is the capital of the Phuket Province, covering all of the island. As of 2007 the city has a population of 75,573 people. It covers the subdistricts (tambon) Talat Yai (Thai: ตลาดใหญ่) and Talat Nuea (Thai: ตลาดเหนือ) of Mueang Phuket district.

History

On February 13, 2004 the town was elevated to city status (thesaban nakhon, Thai: เทศบาลนคร).

Climate

Under the Köppen climate classification, Phuket features a tropical monsoon climate. Due to its proximity to the equator, in the course of the year, there is little variation in temperatures. The city has an average annual high of 32 °C (90 °F) and an annual low of 24 °C (75 °F). Phuket has a dry season that runs from December through March and a wet season that covers the other eight months. However, like many cities that feature a tropical monsoon climate, Phuket sees some precipitation even during its dry season. Phuket averages roughly 2,300 millimetres (91 in) of rain.

MICE City

Phuket is one of the five major MICE cities in Thailand designated by TCEB. It became the MICE hub in the South due to its premium accommodation, easy air access and good connections with neighbouring provinces that are also rich in natural beauty. The Phuket International Convention and Exhibition Centre is a world-class convention centre, accommodating from 500 to 4,000 participants. Additionally, Phuket and the adjacent provinces of Krabi and Phang Nga have more than 1,000 venues.[5] Phuket hosted events such as Rotary International meeting (2013) or PIMEX - Phuket International Boat Show (2014).[6]
