The Phoenix Picturehouse is a cinema in Oxford, England,[1] formerly for many years a nationally leading independent art house cinema.[2] It is part of the Picturehouse Cinemas group and is located at 57 Walton Street in the Jericho district of central Oxford.

History

The North Oxford Kinema first opened in Walton Street in 1913.[3][2] The building was designed by Gilbert T. Gardiner, a local architect. It changed ownership several times during its early years. In 1920, it was renamed The Scala under the ownership of Poole's. In 1925, it briefly became the New Scala under Ben Jay.

In 1930, the lease was acquired by J. R. Poyntz and sound equipment was installed. Subtitled films for language student were also screened. The cinema was in the ownership of the Poytz family for forty years, becoming one of the most important art houses cinema in the United Kingdom outside London.[2]

In 1970, the cinema was acquired by Star Entertainments and became Studio One and Studio Two. For a while, adult films were shown in Studio X.[2] In 1989, it was renamed the Phoenix Cinema under Picturehouse. This was the start of the Picturehouse chain of 21 cinemas. In November 2012, this was acquired by Cineworld. Although it is no longer independent, the Phoenix Picturehouse still has the feel of an independent cinema. In 2013, the cinema celebrates its centenary on 15 March.[2][4]
