Petrovice (German: Petersdorf) is a village and municipality in Bruntál District in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. The Petrovice municipality is situated in the westernmost and most mountainous part of the Osoblažsko Microregion in the Petrovický stream valley. The mountains of Zlatohorská Upland rise steeply from the stream banks, reaching 900 meters in height. The rural character of the countryside (Petrovice is a Village Conservation Area)[1] makes it popular for holidays. Currently, there are 131 inhabitants living in the village.
Petrovice Viewing Tower
The dominating feature of this corner of the Moravian-Silesian Region is the nearly 900 meter high bordering mountain of Biskupská kupa, which also has a viewing tower. The viewing tower is the oldest stone tower in the Jeseníky mountains. It was built in 1898 by the German tourist association MSSGV to commemorate 50 years of the reign of Franz Joseph I and is 18 meters high. The tower was closed to the public after World War II and was used as a TV transmitter. The main reconstruction work began in 1996 and the tower was re-opened to the public in 1998 to mark its 100 year anniversary. Since 2006, a post office has been open and domestic and foreign mail can be sent directly from the viewing tower. On a day with good visibility, it is possible to see the Polish city of Wroclaw or the highest peaks of High Tatras in Slovakia from the tower.
Architecture
Petrovice village contains examples of folk architecture, such as country houses No. 39, 115, 130 and 137. The village is dominated by the single-aisle Church of St. Roch, built near the end of the 17th century. Petrovice also has facilities for skiers that includes a ski lift situated at the end of the village towards Heřmanovice. Heřmanovice is also a very attractive tourist destination as it is one of the two village conservation areas in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Heřmanovice municipality is a protected conservation village because of a uniquely preserved complex of Jeseníky residential folk architecture of the Eastern Sudeten type“. The town of Zlaté Hory is an attractive destination, with its outdoor mining museum (Zlatorudné mills), as well as the ski resort below Příčná hora.
