Pervomaiskyi (Ukrainian: Первомайський) is a city in Kharkiv Oblast (province) of Ukraine also known by its nickname Likhachova. Population is 32,523 (2001) and 41,352 (Current figures by the city administration). This makes Pervomaikyi the fourth largest city in Kharkiv Oblast. The city is also known for its popular Khimprom which was one of the biggest chemical factories in the former USSR. The city is situated about 100 km (62.14 mi) south east from the district center and on the main rail road "Pivdenna Zaliznitsa". Pervomaiski is 4th largest city in the district of Kharkov as some facts confirm that also. The city has lush green plots and parks, a cultural center named "DK Khimik" and a stadium also named "Khimik".

History of Pervomaiskyi

In 1869 a railway was opened Курск-Харьков-Sevastopol. In August of the same year a whistle stop was built in 80 kilometres of Kharkov. Here trains began to be stopped for addition to the supply of water, firewoods. This whistle stop was named by Likhachevo, in honour a squire Likhachova, an estate of which was near a village Sivash in a few kilometres from railways. Water was supplied from a lake Sivash to specially for building purposes, for providing of normal pressure of water, built a water-tower.

Transport

Pervomaiskyi is situated on main railway line (Pivdina Zalisnitsa), connecting north with south. The railway station at Pervomaiskyi is called Lehacheovoe or in Russian Lekhachova. Moreover Pervomaiskyi lies on the main road hub called Sevostopolskaya Trassa (The Sevestopol Main Track) linking many other cities like Lozovaya, Merefa, Balakleya and Izum together with the Kharkiv Oblast.

Economy

Pervomaiskyi was planned as a colony for the workers and clerical staff of above mentioned Khimprom "The Chemical Factory". Until the fall of USSR 1992, the city's inhabitants had good earnings but after the fall of USSR the city's inhabitants saw a big mishap in city's economy. Many stood jobless up to date. But in late 90's some private companies came into market and this move gave Pervomaiskyi a good start. Many people who are not satisfy though what they get as their income anyhow work in these companies. Some of popular private companies are listed below.

  • Roma (A bakery factory in city's heart near market.)
  • Ekipaj (A firm offering plastic cum metal windows and doors.)
  • Tetra (Wheat and Rice refining factory )
  • Piramida (A firm offering plastic cum metal windows and doors.)
  • Start (A sausage production unit near Railway Station)
  • Blesk (A detergent whole sale and retail supermarket near bazar)
  • Raf-Graf (An upcoming graphic designing and advertising firm)

Except it there are many small shops which offer variety of products from needles to computers. A planned Bewery is still being awaited in future near 6th Mikroregion.

Education

Pervomaiskyi originally had just 2 schools till 1977. Now It has 7 secondary schools among those is only 1 Russian Medium the rest are Ukrainian Medium. Pervomaiskiy has 14 Baby Day-Care Centres (Detski Sad) which are all Ukrainian Medium. There is one college offering Technical Education after 9th Class in many fields like Cooking, Tractor Building, Driving, Heavy Wheel Drving, Field Fertalizing and so on.

Geography and climate

As Pervomaiskyi lies just around 95 km south of Kharkov so its climate and weather does not almost differs from Kharkov.Pervomaiskyi's climate is moderate continental: cold and snowy winters, and hot summers. The seasonal average temperatures are not too cold in winter, not too hot in summer: −6.9 °C (19.6 °F) in January, and 20.3 °C (68.5 °F) in July. The average rainfall totals 513 mm (20 in) per year, with the most in June and July.
