Perušić is a town and a municipality in Lika-Senj County, Croatia. The municipality has 3,494 inhabitants, while the town itself has 846. The municipality is made up of 88.81% Croats. The municipality is part of Lika, a mountainous region in central Croatia. The Kosinj region is located near the town.

Geography

Urban agglomeration Perusic located in the southeastern part of Lika, at an altitude 575-600, valleys in the area - a field between the railway line east of Citadels (old town Perušić in place today the Tower) and the hills west of Klis, along the main communication (Otocac-Gospic) . The most important are the routes through which the Perušić well connected: state road D-50 between Otocac and Gospic, the Zagreb-Split highway (highway exit in Peru) and the main railway 11th MP

History

Perušić's emergence as an organized settlement dates from the early modern period (16th and 17th century), when the settlement is located on the border line between the Ottoman Empire and Europe. It was first mentioned Perušić in 1487. It was founded by brothers Dominic and Gaspar Perušić, from a noble family that comes from the hinterland. According to their last place gets its name, a family built on a hill fortress of defense in the literature have different names for Perušić: old city, Gradina, and people usually just say Perušić tower. When the Turks conquered the Lika and Krbava Perušić, as part of Lika Sandzak, it became the main stronghold of the Turkish Like. Turks in the same period belonged to the whole Kosinjski end. Continually inhabited desolate area to determine its border zone by Venice and the Habsburg Monarchy. This, the borderland between the three great empires (Habsburg Monarchy with the remains of the Croatian-Hungarian Empire, the Venetian Republic and Ottoman Empire) was the scene of constant warfare. Exemption from the Turkish authorities in Lika began in 1685. The town was administered within the Military Border of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, in the Kingdom of Hungary in 1871,[1] until the end of WWI.

At the time of the Greater rebellion[2] and aggression against Croatia, Perušić be found near the front lines. Safety of this town was not safe even after the stabilization of the battlefield and the international recognition of the Croatian part of the countries of the European Community. In addition to artillery attacks, 19 January 1992nd Greater undertaken and infantry attack by the Croatian troops refused.[3]

Croatian literacy

According to historical documents Perušić can be called the cradle of Croatian literacy. Shortly after the printing press was invented in the village near Denison, Perušić printed in the Roman Missal according to the law court or Kosinjski Missal (Catholic religious books), one of the oldest printed books in Croatia and Europe, with numerous illustrations and ornaments.

Farming and some agricultural industries are the main industries. The nearby highway brought up rapid economic development.

Landmarks

Grabovača

Main article: Grabovača

Grabovača, the elevation of the mid-Velebit is situated between the Lika karstic plains and fields Perusic, 2 km from the center of Perušić. It is located at 770 m above sea level near the karst basin of the river Lika. With it on the west and south shoots wide panorama of the vast karst plateau with Lika River canyon, an artificial lake breads and green wall on the far horizon of Velebit. To the east you can see historical monuments tower from the late 17th century parish church. Cross the late 17th the century. On Grabovac is an invaluable wealth of underground karst forms, which makes 1/4 of the total number of protected caves facilities in Croatia. The complex variety and abundance of calcite formations valuable speleological phenomena (six cave and a cave) is located at spatially restricted sites of only 1.5 km2.[6]

Kosinj Bridge

Kosinj Bridge is built of stone, seventy meters long bridge over the river Lika, connecting the Upper and Lower Denison. It was designed in the 19th Century architect Milivoj Frković, and is built on the model of early Croatian bridge building, technique, "uklinjenjem stone." The bridge is unique and the openings in the arches, which have the function of relieving water waves on impact with the bridge, and water to illustrate the proper circles.

Kruščica

Near Licko field, in 1966th it was artificially created by the accumulation lake with an 80 meter high dam, in whose depths of submerged village with the church of St. Ilya.

Sport

The local soccer team is NK Perušić.
